🎙️In this episode of the BBK Free Speech Podcast, Jennifer Ellis, Senior Solicitor in our Military Claims team, speaks with Nikki Scott, Founder of Scotty’s Little Soldiers. Nikki’s charity supports children and young people who have lost a parent who served in the British Armed Forces.

This powerful first instalment of a two part series explores the story behind the charity’s creation and how it has grown into a nationwide support network for bereaved military families. You'll hear about Nikki’s journey through grief, how Scotty’s Little Soldiers supports bereaved military children, and the impact of Prince Harry becoming the charity’s Global Ambassador.

A new survey has revealed just how widespread s*xualised behaviour remains within the Armed Forces and why change can no longer be delayed.
My colleague Natasha Mason, shares her thoughts on what must happen next:

As a veteran and now a solicitor in Bolt Burdon Kemp’s Military Claims team, I understand the values that underpin military service. The Armed Forces ask extraordinary things of the people who serve – and in return, they owe them something fundamental: safety, dignity, and protection. Yet the re...

A Coldstream Guard is now on trial at Bulford Military Court, accused of ra**ng a sleeping female soldier while on deployment in Kenya. The evidence presented is deeply disturbing, and for those of us working in this space, painfully familiar.

Cases like this are not rare. They highlight the continued need for a justice system that prioritises survivors and holds perpetrators to account. Too often, incidents of s*xual violence in the Armed Forces are mishandled or minimised, and the chain of command remains far too involved in decisions about how to respond.

No serviceperson should fear coming forward—and no survivor should be left behind.

Jordan Morris was found not guilty of r**e by Bulford Military Court after a 3 day trial in April 2025

This is how you can help support women in the Armed Forces:

• MPs must re-establish the Women in Defence APPG
• The military must be held accountable for protecting servicewomen
• The Service Justice System must be reformed to ensure independent handling of misconduct cases

We are asking everyone to contact their MP and ask them to take action:

• Find your MP’s details using the link provided
• Use the email template provided to make it easier to send a message

Every email counts. Together, we can ensure this issue is not ignored: https://www.boltburdonkemp.co.uk/our-insights/campaigns/our-call-for-stronger-support-from-parliament-and-the-government-for-women-in-defence/

The Women in Defence APPG was established to tackle serious issues faced by servicewomen and female veterans. It was a cross-party effort to ensure these concerns remained a priority in defence policy.

Since the 2024 election, the APPG has not been reinstated, and no MP has stepped forward to continue its work. Women in Defence still face barriers to justice, harassment, and discrimination, but without political backing, these issues risk being ignored.

Legal professionals, charities and advocates have worked tirelessly to push for reform, but lasting change requires government action. The work former MP Sarah Atherton started must not be abandoned. MPs must re-establish the APPG and ensure that the military is held accountable.

If you support this cause, share this post and help raise awareness.

We have created a simple guide letting you know how you can make a difference. Read more here: https://www.boltburdonkemp.co.uk/our-insights/campaigns/our-call-for-stronger-support-from-parliament-and-the-government-for-women-in-defence/

, Tory MP and former soldier, has voiced a provocative stance in .CO.UK He argues that the application of civilian law and European human rights frameworks to military operations is compromising UK national security. Tugendhat proposes that the UK should formally derogate from the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) for overseas military operations, a move he believes will empower commanders and strengthen national security.

This raises significant questions about the balance between operational effectiveness and legal obligations on the battlefield. What are your thoughts on the potential implications of such a derogation for military and legal practice?

In a candid address, the Chief of the Army has brought to light a pressing issue: the role of some senior officers in enabling harassment within their ranks. This serious matter calls for a comprehensive review and immediate action to reform how leadership and disciplinary issues are handled in the military.

Harassment destroys trust and integrity, crucial pillars of our armed forces, impacting everyone's safety and morale. We must rally behind efforts to transform leadership culture into one that truly respects and safeguards all personnel.

The inquest into Gunner Jaysley Beck’s tragic death concluded today, with the coroner stating that the British Army’s response to her s*xual assault complaint was grossly inadequate and contributed significantly to her decision to end her life. Despite her efforts to seek help, her pleas were largely ignored, leading to devastating consequences.

This ruling underscores the need for urgent and comprehensive reform within military protocols to protect service members from similar neglect. Our thoughts are with Jaysley’s family, who have endured so much pain.

Jaysley Beck, 19, was found hanged in her room at Larkhill Camp in Wiltshire in December 2021.
