The past few weeks has seen travel chaos with hundreds of flights being cancelled and airports struggling to process passengers through security, causing lengthy delays. Most affected have been those travelling with British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair and TUI, although most other airlines have also been impacted. Passengers have been contacting me with lots of stories about cancelled and delayed flights, long delays at the airport and their struggle to get information from the airlines....

With energy prices rising it comes as no surprise to anyone when they open their gas or electric bill and find it is far higher than usual. By Dean Dunham 4th March 2022 Throughout the lockdowns, lots of readers asked for my help when Teletext Holidays and Alpharooms (both owned by Truly Holdings) failed to refund them for holidays cancelled due to the pandemic. I very publicly called Truly Holdings out on this telling them they were breaching consumer law. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) then picked up on this and investigated....

By Dean Dunham 4 March 2022 When the Consumer Rights Act 2015 was brought into force in October 2015 it was another big step forwards for consumer rights, as we now had one piece of legislation that dealt with most everyday consumer issues (rather than several pieces of legislation) and we had a law that was fit for the twenty-first century....

By Dean Dunham 24 February 2022 One of the most common complaints that have occupied my inbox in recent times relates to the delivery of goods, specifically where the retailer claims the goods were left outside and you tell me they are nowhere to be seen. My response is always clear, unless you agreed that the goods could be left with a neighbour or somewhere safe if you are out when delivery occurs, it is not your responsibility if the goods go missing....

By Dean Dunham 27 February 2022 Have suppliers mis-sold driveway gravel to millions of households up and down the country? According to Sunday People reader Paul Kemp and several experts I have spoken to, the answer could be “yes”. Paul from Birmingham ordered gravel for his driveway from an online supplier. He says the advert clearly labelled the gravel as ‘driveway aggregates’....

By Dean Dunham 25 February 2022 The headlines have naturally been dominated this week with news of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. But Brits are also being warned of knock-on effects of the invasion closer to home, with major hikes in the price of living on the cards following threats of runaway inflation, increased interest rates, surges in oil prices, export issues with food ingredients, and mayhem for the stock market. ...

By Dean Dunham 13 February 2022 With Covid restrictions being withdrawn, it is paving the way for more people to book an overseas holiday. But following the holiday refunds saga that we have seen during the pandemic, with tour operators either taking an eternity to refund for cancelled holidays or refusing to do so, consumers are rightly nervous. One of the most popular questions I’ve been asked over the last few weeks is how can we safely book a holiday?...

By Dean Dunham 13 February 2022 Questions about private parking tickets fill my inbox nearly every week and on many occasions, it is clear that the consumer has been treated unfairly, but the rules surrounding private parking operators do nothing to assist. However, new rules are on the way and it looks like the whole landscape surrounding private parking tickets is going to change and be weighted more in favour of the consumer....

Introducing ‘The Consumer Lawyer’

theconsumerlawyer.co.uk is the UK’s leading consumer law advice site, providing advice, guidance, and template letters on many subjects affecting consumers. We are commonly referred to as “the go to site for consumer law issues” and the site is used as an authoritative source of information by consumer affairs journalists and the wider media community.

The site was founded by multi-award-winning lawyer Dean Dunham, who is widely considered as one of the leading authorities on consumer law, and is a passionate consumer rights campaigner. Dean is also a regular commentator in the media, writing consumer law columns every week in the Daily Express and Sunday People, and co-hosting the Consumer Hour on LBC radio every Sunday, 9-10pm.

The site is completely FREE for consumers to use and produces a monthly consumer law update for subscribers, which contains useful tips, advice, guidance and relevant news.

Most advice blogs and guides about ‘consumer law’ matters on the site are written by Dean. He has been a qualified Barrister and Solicitor-Advocate for more than 20 years and was named ‘Consumer Lawyer of the Year’ in 2018, 2019 and 2020.
