“The one who climbs a good tree deserves a push.” — Yoruba proverb

There’s a lesson in that for law firms.

Excellent work gets you up the tree. The right strategy gives you the push.

That means being clear about what you’re known for, building relationships before there’s a mandate, sharing insight, staying visible in the markets you want to grow in, and making sure opportunities aren’t missed.

Visibility isn’t about making more noise. It’s about making it easier for the right people to see your value.

That’s where strategy matters.

Why does everyone still call BD when they need a marketing brochure?

A strong BD professional should do more than make things look good.

They should understand the market, spot opportunities, understand clients and help turn relationships into revenue.

For law firms building dedicated BD & marketing functions, the question is no longer just “Can they do marketing?”

It’s: Can they contribute to growth?

Our Hiring for Growth guide explores the skills law firms should look for when building BD & marketing capability. (Link to the guide is in the comments)

Your busiest practice may not be your most profitable.

More matters. More hours. More revenue. But does that mean more profit?

Profitability is shaped by pricing, resource allocation, matter management and the clients you choose to serve.

September has arrived. You know what that means… event season. 👀

Conferences. Panels. Networking receptions. Breakfasts you “definitely need to attend.” And endless “we should catch up while we’re here.”

But remember: the event is only the beginning.

The real BD happens in the follow-up.

May your calendar be full and your follow-up even fuller.

Happy Friday from LGC Africa. 🥂

“We’ve had a strong year.”

But how do you prove it?

More clients. More work. More revenue. These may signal growth, but they don’t always tell you what drove it, whether it’s sustainable, or what should be replicated.

Growth without measurement can easily become perception.

LGC Truth Report 2: The Measurement Imperative explores how law firms can move beyond reporting outcomes to understanding the evidence behind performance.

Because “we’ve had a strong year” means more when you can prove it.

What does the evidence tell you?

What can a Coke bottle teach a law firm about winning clients? 👀

Quite a lot.

“Share a Coke” worked because Coca-Cola made a familiar product feel personal.

The same principle applies to legal marketing: your clients don’t want to feel like “the market.” They want to feel understood.

So, what happens when your law firm stops speaking to everyone and starts speaking directly to the clients you want to reach?

That’s Lesson 6 of the LGC Market Mastery Playbook.

Hiring for Growth: The Skills to Look for in Legal BD and Marketing Professionals

A practical resource from LGC Africa for law firms building stronger BD and marketing functions.

More African law firms are hiring for business development. But many are still working out what the role should actually look like.

We see this regularly in our work with law firms across African markets.

Firms are recognising that growth requires more than technical excellence and are creating dedicated BD and marketing roles to support their ambitions.

But hiring someone is only the first step.

What should you look for when making the hire?
What should that person actually be responsible for?
How do you know whether they’re doing good work?
And how do you onboard and develop them so they can make a meaningful contribution to the firm?
These are questions we help law firms think through as they build their BD and marketing capabilities.

We’ve also created a practical resource to help firms start with one of the most important pieces of the puzzle: knowing what skills to look for.

If your firm is building or strengthening its BD and marketing function, this is a useful place to start.

Does Corporate Governance Actually Work in the African Context?

Rita Kabatunzi, Company Secretary, Stanbic Uganda Holdings, Lead Facilitator of ACORP 2026, has some thoughts.

Governance can look very different on paper than it does in the boardroom.

ACORP 2026 is a new ACGC executive programme for experienced professionals who advise boards, support senior leadership and shape organisational decision-making. It explores what happens when governance principles meet real organisational pressures, from boardroom dynamics and culture to risk, technology and AI.

The programme uses African case studies and real governance experience to examine what works, what doesn’t, and why context matters.

The African perspective is deliberate. For professionals working across African markets, it provides a grounded way to examine how governance issues play out in practice. For lawyers and professionals outside the continent who advise African clients or work with African markets, it offers a deeper understanding of the context, challenges and realities that shape governance across Africa.

Watch Dr Rita’s take on what ACORP is designed to explore.

ACORP 2026 runs from 2 September to 20 October 2026.

“It is not fruitful to think alone.” — Ghanaian (Akan) proverb

This applies to law firms more than we think.
The best BD ideas don’t always come from the BD team.
Sometimes, it’s a partner who knows exactly what a client needs.
Sometimes, it’s an associate spotting a new opportunity.
Sometimes, it’s a sector specialist noticing a market shift.
And sometimes, it’s the BD team connecting all the dots.

When everyone brings their perspective to the table, good ideas become real opportunities.

Today’s business development lesson comes courtesy of Mr Bean... 😂

Waiting around isn’t a growth strategy. It’s natural to hope a promising opportunity comes through. But the strongest firms don’t stop there. While one conversation is progressing, they’re already nurturing relationships, creating value and opening new ones.

Because sustainable growth comes from a pipeline that’s always moving, not from waiting for one client to make a decision.

Happy Friday from LGC Africa.
