🇬🇧➡️🇮🇹 Moving from the UK to Italy: What You Need to Know (2025)
Italy remains a popular choice for Britons seeking culture, lifestyle, and professional opportunities. However, since Brexit, moving there is no longer automatic. Here’s an overview of the current requirements.
🔹 Visa requirement
For stays exceeding 90 days, UK citizens must obtain the appropriate visa before moving. Options include:
Elective Residency Visa – for retirees or those with sufficient independent income.
Work Visa – if you have secured employment in Italy.
Start-up or Investor Visa – for entrepreneurs and investors.
Student Visa – if enrolled at an Italian institution.
🔹 Registration in Italy
Upon arrival, you must:
✅ Register with the local Questura (police headquarters) for your residence permit (permesso di soggiorno).
✅ Register at your local Comune (town hall) if your stay is long-term.
🔹 Healthcare and social security
Residents can access the Servizio Sanitario Nazionale (SSN), the Italian public healthcare system.
To do so, you must either be employed, self-employed, or pay a contribution.
Pension rights may be transferred under EU–UK agreements.
🔹 Permanent residence
After five years of legal residence, you may apply for permanent status, which grants rights similar to those of Italian citizens.
👉 In summary: Relocating to Italy from the UK requires planning and the correct visa, but once registered, you will have full access to healthcare, social services, and the vibrant Italian lifestyle.
