Our lawyers who are representing current and former patients of University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW) have identified concerns with neurosurgical treatment across the trust. We're now calling on them to proactively contact all potentially affected patients, commit to sharing findings transparently and take decisive action to prevent such failings happening again.

Following the exposure of a scandal involving more than 30 patients given unnecessary chemotherapy earlier this year, new evidence has come to light that points to a wider pattern of harm across the trust. We're representing more than 30 current and former patients and have uncovered clear evidence of negligence by neurosurgeons in their handling of neuro-oncology cases. Alongside this, investigations into broader failures of care within the trust have also uncovered failures by pharmacists to challenge prolonged chemotherapy treatment, which have led to devastating lifelong consequential outcomes for some patients.

Concerns about chemotherapy now point to systemic failings involving neuro-oncology clinicians, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists and more at UHCW.

The Independent has published Gayle Bodinnar's story — another patient who has received unnecessary chemotherapy treatment at the University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust.

Sadly, Gayle received more than 150 TMZ sessions over the course of 12 years, "leaving her with crippling side-effects including being housebound for life" due to "overwhelming fatigue". Her daughter, Kimberley, said that "She [Gayle] went from being like a young mum to like an old lady... she's lost the will to live".

According to the article, Gayle was told by doctors that she'd be on TMZ for life. She also claims that she was told about "being put on a clinical trial", though "no documents or consent forms" have yet been found.

Against her family's wishes — who'd always been told that Gayle would die if she came off the drug — Gayle eventually told doctors that she wanted to stop treatment. Yet "to her family's amazement, Ms Bodinnar gradually improved once she was off the drug". "I would like answers", said Gayle. "I don't think I'll ever trust any medical professionals again".

Kimberley has called for those responsible to be held to account. "What we've been through is just horrific... I don't want to know why they've done it, because it's a crime either way... it's that they admit that they've done it and it stops".

As seen on ITV's Good Morning Britain today, our lawyers — who are representing current and former patients of the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW) — are calling for an extended patient safety review and independent investigation into a chemotherapy regime that saw its oncology and pharmacy department routinely prescribe remarkably high incidences of toxic chemotherapy.

Our Head of Medical Negligence, Fiona Tinsley, said: "The extent of this scandal, and the physical and mental impact it has had on Professor Brown’s patients cannot be underestimated. It is our clear view that all the patients represented by Brabners have been subjected to negligent treatment — treatment which they were led to believe was keeping them alive. Through our campaign, they are only now realising that much of this treatment deviated wildly from established medical guidance and, in some instances, the ‘treatment’ was entirely unnecessary.

We believe there are many more patients out there who haven’t yet come forward and some who may have sadly passed away.

While we welcome the ongoing investigations currently being undertaken by the General Medical Council and Royal College of Physicians, we believe a full independent inquiry is necessary — including an extension of the Trust’s own review back to 2006 — not only to ensure justice for victims, but that processes are put in place to better identify and prevent such failings happening again".

🚨 "Prolonged and unnecessary chemotherapy" for "low-grade tumour" led to infertility 🚨

As reported by the BBC today, further patients (and family members of patients) who were under the care of Professor Ian Brown at Coventry Hospital have come forward with their stories.

Elena Adams was prescribed temozolomide after her 2016 brain tumour diagnosis. She underwent 66 cycles of treatment over the course of six years after initially being told that she had a "low-grade tumour and chemotherapy was not necessary".

Her diagnosis "was later upgraded and she said she was told she would be on temozolomide for the rest of her life". Elena "was later diagnosed with the bone condition osteonecrosis and now struggles to walk".

The same BBC article features comments from Jo Harrison, who believes that her late husband Michael's (known as Jake) ten-year temozolomide treatment for a brain tumour may have led to him developing dementia. Jo did raise her concerns about the treatment with hospital bosses, but they were dismissed.

"I just didn't feel being on these drugs for so long was doing him any good at all", Jo told the BBC. "I thought they were making his brain strange... It was very much like dementia. But compared to the dementia my brothers had, it was nothing like".

More patients are coming forward who were affected by prolonged Temozolomide chemotherapy treatments at University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW).

Richard Walker — who sadly underwent 22 months of unnecessary chemo — has bravely told his story to BBC News.

"I feel like I've put my illness and my life into the hands of somebody you naturally trust... to find out I didn't necessarily need 22 months of chemo, is very shattering and confusing”, he told the BBC.

The father of two thought that taking Temozolomide indefinitely “was his only option to stay alive”.

Our own Fiona Tinsley revealed that some of our clients have developed conditions like secondary cancer & liver damage that could be a result of prolonged Temozolomide treatment.

"We've got patients who've got mobility problems, long-term gastrointestinal problems”, Fiona said. “And when they queried... with clinicians at the Trust, they were dismissed... They've had to seek out those investigations on their own."

If you believe that you or a loved one may have been subjected to unwarranted chemotherapy, we're happy to speak to you in the strictest of confidence.
