Before founding Cottingham Legal Wills and Probate Ltd, I spent the first 15 years of my career in the care sector — working in residential care homes for the elderly and later nursing in the community. I supported terminally ill patients through the final stages of their lives, doing everything I could to make their final days as comfortable and dignified as possible. But my care extended beyond the patients — I was also there for their families, offering guidance, reassurance, and emotional support during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. After becoming a single parent to three young children, I felt the need for a new direction — one that would allow me to build a secure, stable, and happy life for my family while continuing to help others in meaningful ways. I made the decision to pursue a law degree, and I truly loved every minute of it. Balancing full-time study with parenting was never easy, but the four of us navigated those three years together, driven by love, determination, and hope for the future. Following my graduation, I joined the Society of Will Writers as a Technical Advisor, where I had the opportunity to apply my legal training in a practical, people-focused environment. I later moved to their sister company, SWW Trust Corporation, where I spent the next 14 years and ultimately became a Director. During this time, I also taught new members of the Society, delivering training on probate and trusts. It was a privilege to guide others as they entered the profession, and one of the most rewarding aspects of my career has been watching those individuals go on to build successful, ethical businesses of their own. Whilst still working full-time, I incorporated Cottingham Legal in 2015 with a clear vision: to create a family-run business grounded in compassion, integrity, and professionalism. I wanted to build something that reflected not only my legal expertise, but also the values I had carried with me from my early years in care — empathy, dignity, and unwavering support for those in need. At Cottingham Legal, we understand that planning for the future or dealing with the loss of a loved one can be deeply emotional.
