When training service dogs for high hostile situations you must think outside the box. Incorporating vehicles, weapons, obstacles, gunfire and loud noises and other possible deterents.

Imprinting the dog from a very young age to environmental training is an absolute must.

The dog must not become equipment friendly. Where you have experienced decoys, muzzle fighting with target in focus is a must. Allowing the dog to take the fight to the decoy for real.

Teaching the dog to hit various bodyparts eg groin and face aswell as the grab and hold utilising not just arm strikes whilst holding weapons, leg strikes must be Incorporating too.

Fighting and releasing decoys yourself with no intervention from dog.

Fighting and holding decoys with intervention from the dog.

Practicing recall in mid flight and a emergency down and stay.

Full Bite Grip (One Fixed Hold) Learning the out doesn't have to be a fight between handler and dog. This training should be implemented in the earlier stages on the tug roll.

If the dog is not taught the 'OUT' correctly at the right time it can lead into further complications down the road, with what you would then refer to as being locked in prey drive.

You may have seen police dog videos of dogs not letting go first time round and force is then having to be implemented or the dog choked off.

All these mistakes can be avoided through the correct training in the early stages of bite work training.

Remember using force wether your a police/security dog handler will have to be justifiable in and judicial hearing. So a dog scissor biting multiple times whilst you are arresting a guilty individual of an inditable offence is an extreme
no-no!

Bite work should eventually include the full spectrum of training.

Hold and bark
Bite on command and hold
Disarming a weapon
Full arrest being made whilst dog is called off and told to stay with no intervention
Call off in mid chase and return to heel.
Muzzle fighting with body target hits
On and off leash bite work
Weapon drill training (For armed personnel)

Preparing Dogs For Bite Work.

Training steps to building drive, skills to build drive in the dog will all depend on each individual dog.

* Genetic gene

* Level of focus

* Level of prey drive

* Remember every dog is different

Skills to learn :-

1 How to slect the right prey item.

2 How to build the drive to the prey item.

3 How to make the dog sit out of drive.

4 How to make the dog focus out of drive.

5 How to deliver or drop the prey item.

6 How to build the grip.

7 How to build the trust with the handler.

8 How to teach the first steps of the Out exercise.

Selecting The Correct Prey Item For Your Dog

Do not use tennis balls, tennis balls cause too much damage to the dogs teeth. Tennis balls and dog sliva causes a chemical reaction that eats away at the tooth enamel.

Balls to use are rubber ones with cords attached. Do not use hard rubber balls these can hurt the dog if hit in the eye when the dog trys to grab them.

You may also use kongs on cord, hoses or tugs.

Let your dog tell you what he likes ❤️

Every dog has a certain potential of genetic drive, this level varies according to the individual dogs genes.

So in every case you can bring the dogs level up to the dogs level of genetic drive.

Through drive the dogs level of focus can be achieved through training. Build up focus through exercises slowly.

1 Teach the dog that training can be fun.

2 Going into drive will result in drive satisfaction. Training in high drive will result in the dog learning quicker than a dog learning in compulsion.

3 The dog should be comfortable when the handler is near him /or her.

4 The dog should be able to keep a firm grip on the prey item at all times.

5 Teach the dog to carry the prey item and play fight for it.

6 The dog should be able to concentrate and focus in drive.

7 Sit, heel, and down are drive commands not compulsion commands.

8 The Out command does not have to create conflict or stress with the dog.

Remember the dog has to have a level of prey drive otherwise there is no hope for further training!

Use an item of prey which your dog likes the most. Teach the dog to Out the prey item and learn that this will allow the dog to have the prey item back once he goes back into high drive. Once the dog starts to learn and understand this conflict for the prey item usually goes away.

Dogs who will have a calm firm grip on a ball or a tug will have a firm charm grip on a sleeve rather than mouthy. Dogs who are mouthy on the prey item are usually concerned that they will lose the prey item when the handler instructs them to Out the prey item. In other words the dog antiscipates the Out and then starts getting mouthy on the prey item or sleeve.

It is important to build trust in handler and dog to develop a good calm grip.
