Around 11 million people in the UK are deaf or have hearing loss, making it the second most common disability, however it often goes unnoticed or undiagnosed because it is an invisible disability.

Whilst not every case of hearing loss is avoidable, unfortunately some instances caused by delay or misdiagnosis can be as a result of medical negligence and, if there had been earlier treatment or diagnosis, the impact could have been reduced or avoided altogether.

Over the past year, we have been proud to support Marley by funding specialist physiotherapy to help manage his condition, Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). SMA is a progressive condition that causes muscle weakness and wasting, and early, consistent intervention can make a meaningful difference to a child’s development and quality of life.

Marley’s parents turned to Flex Health for specialist physiotherapy support and with regular sessions and dedicated home exercises, Marley has made remarkable progress.

SMA has recently been highlighted in the national media following an announcement by singer Jesy Nelson that her twin babies have been diagnosed with the condition. She has launched a petition calling for SMA to be included in the routine newborn heel prick screening test. Early identification is crucial, as access to revolutionary treatment in the earliest stages can help prevent irreversible damage.

The latest findings from a National Maternity and Neonatal Investigation reveal deeply concerning patterns across maternity services, including findings that racism and ‘poor’ staff relationships have resulted in maternity care failings.

Baroness Amos highlighted troubling stereotypes reported during her investigation. Asian women were being stereotyped as ‘princesses’, suggesting they are overly demanding or unable to cope with pain. Black women were characterised as having ‘tough skin’ and being “able to tolerate pain”. Muslim families reported experiencing discrimination based on their religion, which left them feeling unable to raise concerns.

Did you know that a cervical smear test does not detect ovarian cancer?

March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in the UK, dedicated to raising awareness of symptoms, promoting early diagnosis, and supporting those affected.

Common symptoms include:
🟥 Persistent bloating
🟥 Difficulty eating
🟥 Feeling full quickly
🟥 Pelvic and abdominal pain
🟥 Urinary symptoms

👉 Read our full article for more information: https://medicalnegligence.co.uk/latest-news/ovarian-cancer-awareness-month/

Two-thirds of women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer too late, when the cancer is harder to treat. Sadly, symptoms of ovarian cancer can often be misdiagnosed as other conditions. Examples include general dismissal as “everyday” women’s problems or irritable bowel syndrome.

A delay in the diagnosis of cancer can reduce a patient’s chances of survival. This can result from doctors failing to detect abnormalities, misinterpreting results, or failing to refer for further tests and investigations.

If you think this has happened to you or a loved one you might have a claim. Contact our specialist Clinical Negligence team to arrange a free, no-obligation consultation.
