The youth court has very different priorities to the adult court. Representation at the youth court needs to be by a specialist advocate with experience in this field.

There is an expectation that most young people will be dealt with by the youth court but for the more serious offences the court has to consider whether these cases should be transferred to the Crown Court.

It is essential that legal advice is provided before this issue is considered by the court.

If you are required to attend an interview in relation to an investigation, it may not take place at a Police Station but elsewhere such as a Jobcentre. Regardless of venue, it will still be an interview ‘under caution’ which means that in the criminal courts, it has the same status as a police interview.

If you have a mental health issue you should be given the benefit of an appropriate adult whilst at the police station. Our representatives will ensure that the police follow the correct procedure in relation to your welfare whilst at the police station. If necessary they will make representations to the police as to alternatives to prosecution.

It is open to the police to consider diversion to the mental health services as an alternative to a prosecution but the correct representations need to be made at the appropriate time to secure this outcome.

A PLO (Public Law Outline) meeting is a formal pre-court meeting with Children's Services when they are considering care proceedings for a child. It's one of the most serious stages before a case can go to Family Court.
