A Certificate of Application under the EU Settlement Scheme can be an important document, but it is often misunderstood.

A CoA may help prove certain temporary rights while an EUSS application, appeal or administrative review is pending, such as the right to work or rent. However, it is not the same as being granted pre-settled or settled status, and it is not a visa, entry clearance document, family permit or visa exemption document.

This distinction can become especially important when travelling. Some people with a Certificate of Application may still face difficulties at the UK border

We have published a detailed Q&A explaining what an EUSS Certificate of Application means, what rights it may help prove, and why applicants should be cautious before travelling while their EUSS matter is pending.

➡️ Thinking of hiring overseas talent in 2026?

If your UK business wants to employ overseas workers under routes such as the Skilled Worker or Global Business Mobility routes, you will usually need a Sponsor Licence.

📖 Read our article about the key requirements for a sponsor licence application. https://angelov.law/en/business-immigration/sponsor-licence/sponsor-licence-application/

❗️A Sponsor Licence is not just an application form, it is a compliance-based system. The Home Office expects businesses to show that they are genuine, operating lawfully, offering genuine vacancies, and capable of meeting ongoing sponsor duties.

🔍 Applications are now subject to increased scrutiny, especially for SMEs, start-ups, and first-time sponsors. The Home Office may examine:

- whether your business is genuinely trading
- whether the role is credible and appropriate
- whether your HR systems are robust enough to meet sponsor duties
- whether key personnel are suitable
- whether the vacancy meets the required skill and salary levels

❌ A refusal can cause significant delay, and there is no right of appeal against a Sponsor Licence refusal.

At Angelov Solicitors, we provide support for businesses applying for a Sponsor Licence, including:

✅advice on eligibility and genuine vacancy issues
✅guidance on key personnel and SMS readiness
✅preparation and review of supporting documents
✅practical compliance guidance from the outset
✅support with Certificates of Sponsorship and related Skilled Worker applications

We help businesses approach the process properly from the start, with compliance in mind.

If your business is considering applying for a Sponsor Licence in 2026, we can help you prepare a strong and compliant application.

🇬🇧 Applying for British Citizenship? Don’t Risk a Refusal at the Final Step

We have now published a detailed guide and FAQ on our website covering the key requirements for British citizenship by naturalisation, including residence and absences, the Good Character requirement, referees, the English language requirement, the Life in the UK Test, and when you can apply for your first British passport.

Many people assume that once they have settled status or Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), applying for British citizenship is straightforward.

In reality, naturalisation is a discretionary application, and refusals often happen because of:
- excess absences
- Good Character concerns
- incorrect or insufficient documents
- issues with referees or eligibility

Even small mistakes can lead to delays, refusal, and wasted fees.

➡️ Application Check
If you need assistance with your application, we offer a British Citizenship Application Check for a fixed fee of £900. This service is suitable for applicants who have prepared their application themselves but would like a solicitor-led legal review before submission.

➡️ Full Representation
We also offer full representation for applicants who need more comprehensive support, particularly where they are unsure what documents to prepare, require advice on discretionary issues, or would benefit from detailed legal representations.

We usually begin with a consultation to explain the requirements and assess your circumstances. After the consultation, we can provide a fixed-fee quote for full representation.

Our full representation service can include:
- drafting the application form
- providing a tailored document list
- reviewing supporting documents
- drafting a detailed letter of representations explaining your circumstances and, where relevant, why discretion should be exercised in your favour
- assisting with administrative steps, including uploading supporting documents and booking biometric appointments

If you would like advice on your British citizenship application, please get in touch.

We have recently updated our 10-Year Long Residence ILR guidance on our website, together with a more detailed FAQ section.

Long residence applications can appear straightforward, but issues such as absences, visitor returns, gaps in leave, and route switching can make a real difference to whether a person qualifies.

Our updated guide covers some of the questions we are most often asked, including when continuous residence may be broken and what applicants should watch out for before submitting an application.

You can read the updated article here:

Many EU citizens and family members may still qualify for Settled Status under the EU Settlement Scheme even if their 5 years in the UK happened long before Brexit.

If you completed a 5-year period of lawful residence in the UK before 31 December 2020, you may already have acquired rights of permanent residence under EU law. In some cases, those rights can still be relied on today.

This can apply even where someone later returned to the UK on a Student visa or Skilled Worker visa.

Late applications may still be possible where there are reasonable grounds for the delay.

These cases are often complex and depend on careful legal assessment: including historic lawful residence, rights of permanent residence, any supervening events, and if applicable, late application grounds.

Read our article about historic residence in the UK: https://angelov.law/en/euss-historic-residence-settled-status/

At Angelov Solicitors, we have successfully helped clients obtain Settled Status based on historic residence.

We’ve just launched a new tool on our website: the UK Immigration Risk Checker.

Many UK visa and settlement applications are refused not because the main route requirements are missing, but because there may be underlying suitability concerns. For example, previous overstaying, breaches of immigration conditions, criminal convictions, or issues relating to incorrect information in past applications.

Our new tool is designed to help users identify whether their case may involve potential refusal risks before they apply.

It provides general guidance only and is not a substitute for legal advice, but it can be a useful starting point if you are unsure whether your immigration history may affect a future application.

You can try it here:
https://angelov.law/en/uk-immigration-risk-checker/

If the tool highlights potential concerns, we recommend seeking legal advice.

🌍 Thinking about applying for the UK Global Talent Visa (GTV)?

The Global Talent Visa (GTV) is a UK immigration route for individuals who are recognised or emerging leaders in their field. This includes applicants in academia or research, digital technology, and arts and culture. Unlike many other work-based routes, it does not require a job offer or a sponsor, and can lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in three or five years. It replaced the Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa in February 2020.

❓Why choose Global Talent visa?
- No job offer or sponsor required
- Can be self-employed, or run your own business
- Bring eligible dependants
- Choose visa length (1–5 years) to manage IHS fees

✅Two ways in
1️⃣ Endorsement (most applicants): by an approved endorsing body (e.g. Arts Council England; The Royal Society/British Academy/Royal Academy of Engineering/UKRI; Tech Nation).

Categories:
- Exceptional Talent (leader)
- Exceptional Promise (emerging leader).

2️⃣ Prestigious Prize: if you’ve won a prize on the prize list, you can apply without endorsement.

⏰ ILR timelines
- 3 years: if you have been endorsed by Royal Society/BA/RAEng/UKRI) and Exceptional Talent by ACE/Tech Nation, or winners of eligible prizes.

- 5 years: typically Exceptional Promise (arts/tech).

Time on other eligible visas (e.g. Skilled Worker, Innovator Founder, Scale-up) can be combined with GTV time to be eligible for the accelerated settlement.

🙅Common pitfalls
📌 Weak or generic letters of recommendation that don’t evidence impact or leadership
📌 Evidence pack that doesn’t match the published criteria for your discipline
📌 Missing the strategic choice between Talent vs Promise or the most suitable endorsing body
📌 Inconsistent story between Stage 1 (endorsement) and Stage 2 (visa)

🧑‍⚖️ How Angelov Solicitors can help?

Step 1️⃣: Personalised Eligibility Assessment & Endorsement Route Mapping: We begin with a detailed consultation to understand your background, career trajectory, and future plans in the UK.

Step 2️⃣: Legal Interpretation of Immigration Rules and Endorsing body guidance: We translate this legal and technical framework into actionable requirements so you fully understand.

Step 3️⃣: Evidence Preparation: we help you build a persuasive, criteria-aligned portfolio.

Step 4️⃣: Endorsement Application Submission: We assemble a well-organised, sectioned application bundle, presenting your case in a format aligned with the expectations of the endorsing body.

Step 5️⃣: Visa Submission: We prepare your Stage 2 visa application, ensuring consistency between your visa application and endorsement application.

If you are considering GTV and want solicitor-led, bespoke guidance grounded in the Rules, we can help.

Book a one-hour consultation or message us here and we’ll arrange a call.

🚨 UK Business Visa Refused only 11 Days Before Travel - Approved after 1 day

Visitor visa applications are often refused where the applicant does not sufficiently demonstrate the purpose of the visit, financial circumstances, or strong ties to their country of residence.

In this case, we were instructed shortly after a previous refusal, with only 11 days remaining before the intended departure date. We conducted a full review of the application and refusal notice, identified the core issues, and prepared a comprehensive, well-evidenced fresh application, addressing each point.

Following submission via the priority service, the visa was granted within one day of reaching the decision centre.

✅ A refusal doesn’t have to mean the end of your plans - but getting it right the first time is crucial. Every refusal must be disclosed in future applications and can make reapplying more complex.

📩 Contact us for expert assistance with UK Immigration and Nationality matters. The right strategy and representation can make all the difference.
