This is an excellent film and worthy of the awards. However, here's a warning: This is seriously unsettling if you've never seen dementia close up.

From the experience of my sister, shared with me in the latter stages of her late husband's last months, I could understand why and how this film portrayed the terrible effect of this crippling disease in the way it did. Comedy it is NOT! Very realistic , definitely!

New Anthony Hopkins film The Father is a big step forward for the on-screen depiction of the condition. Can it help shift the conversation around it more broadly, asks Hannah Woodhead.

DNR, otherwise known as "Do Not Resuscitate" notices have been in the news again this week. And it's not good news!

For those people who don't know a DNR is a notice to tell the medical staff about a patient and instructs them not to attempt resuscitation if the patient's breathing stops or their heart stops beating.

With so many elderly in hospital because of covid it seems that some have been given DNR notices without the consent of their families.

Obviously, a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is the best choice for anyone worried about what may happen after they go into hospital. In their Health & Welfare LPA a person can choose someone in their family or a friend to make those life or death decisions - rather than leaving the decision to the doctors at the hospital or the care home staff.

If you'd like to find out more then why not call us today. Advice is free and there's no obligation.

Here's another film about dementia that might just win an oscar for Sir Anthony Hopkins.

The film, yet to be released in the UK, gives a very different portrayal of how dementia affects a person.

Disorientation is just one of the affects on a person suffering from thei debilitating disease and the scenery is suitably changed in the film to create such an affect for the viewer.

As a fan of Sir Anthony (loved "The Two Popes) and quite liking Olivia Colman this should be an interesting and entertaining film.

However, the biggest think I think will be in it's education as to what affect dementia has on a person.

And another reminder of the importance of getting things in order by making a Lasting Power of Attorney while you still have your faculties.

Because later may well be too late!

The Father puts you in the confused head of a dementia sufferer, played by Sir Anthony Hopkins.

This entertaining and fictional movie contains lots of dark humour about the dangers of getting old and having someone else start to make both finance and health decisions on their behalf.

The trailer contains swear words, threats of violence and lots of "on the edge of your seat" action and suspense.

Obviously, this story is fictional and exaggerated. But also is a warning that if you want peace of mind for the future then by making a Lasting Power of Attorney now you can rest assured that the person of your choosing (and not someone appointed by the courts) will be looking after your interests

Much loved Barbara Windsor passed away on Thursday aged 83. Her death was long-expected but still came as a shock to those who loved her and who had been her lifelong fans.

Sadly, in 2014 she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s after struggling to learn her lines.

Thankfully, her many fans were able to continue seeing Babs, as she was known, for a further 2 years playing Peggy Mitchell in the TV series East Enders.

Getting old is one thing but Alzheimer’s is quite another.

And when the effects of either are detected early then plans can be put in place to make things easier for later by making a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA).

In almost 100% of situations we strongly suggest that both types of LPA are required. A Health & Welfare LPA for making decisions on care and medical treatment matters – and a Property & Finance LPA for all things to do with money.

By Making an LPA now, while you still have most if not all of your faculties, you can choose someone (or more) to make those decisions for you when you no longer can.

On Health & Welfare your chosen Attorney can only act and make decision on your behalf once you are no longer able. So, there’s no worries about someone making choices for you if you object.

However, with a Property & Finance LPA you can choose when your attorney can act. You can appoint them to assist you while you still have your faculties, if you feel you’d like a little help managing your affairs – or you can stipulate in your LPA that they can only act once you are no longer able to make decisions for yourself.

The choice is yours.

But the best choice is to do something about an LPA now. So, why not contact us today. Even if it’s just for s friendly chat so you can learn a little more about what’s involved. There’s no obligation.

4 Important Facts About an LPA

Fact 1: It gives you peace of mind

You probably wouldn’t want to die without a will in place, especially if you own property, have substantial cash savings, or have a partner or dependants. But what if something happens to you that does not kill you, but leaves you incapable of communicating your wishes to those closest to you.

It’s an uncomfortable thought but it’s crucial to consider it in good health and make the sensible decision – and an LPA is probably the single best way to make sure that your interests are protected from the moment you are incapacitated until your death, after which your will can distribute your estate in the usual way.

Fact 2: An LPA is faster

The Court of Protection exists to make sure your family gets the access to your finances that they need if you are incapacitated, but without an LPA that can take a long time to put into place, which can leave your loved ones to face hardship in the meantime. With an LPA it’s clear who gets access to your money and as soon as it is registered, they can start using it to make sure your family is properly looked after.

Fact 3: You are protected

The Court of Protection can revoke LPAs and can be asked to rule on whether or not they are valid. Meanwhile, the Office of the Public Guardian can be contacted when incidences of abuse by attorneys are suspected, or if they do not appear to be acting in the best interests of the individual.

Fact 4: Financial powers are limited

Your attorney can’t just give away all of your money. Financial gifts are capped, and a court order will be needed to approve more sizeable gifts of your money to other people. Similarly, professional financial advice must be sought before your attorney can make investment decisions on your behalf, protecting you from them speculating too wildly with your money.
