When people receive their Final Order, it’s natural to think: “That’s it. Everything is finished. But ending the marriage and resolving the financial matters arising from it are not the same thing.

The first thing I tell every new client?

Don’t make a permanent decision because of a temporary feeling of fear.

When you’re going through a separation, divorce or disagreement about your children, it’s completely understandable to want one thing: For it to be over.

And that’s when fear can start making decisions for you.

“I’ll just agree to it.”
“I don’t want to make things worse.”
“They said I’ll lose everything if I don’t accept.”
“I can’t cope with this going on any longer.”

But decisions made simply to end the immediate stress can have consequences that last far longer than the difficult period you’re experiencing now.

Whether we’re talking about finances, the family home or arrangements for your children, my advice is always to understand your position and your options before making important decisions.

Getting legal advice doesn’t mean you’re preparing for a battle.

Sometimes it simply means replacing fear and uncertainty with clarity. You don’t need to know exactly what you want before speaking to a solicitor. You just need somewhere to start.

Free Wills Month is launching this Thursday!

I’m delighted to share that FT Law is taking part in Free Wills Month this October.

From 9am on Thursday, 1 October 2026, eligible clients will be able to book an appointment to have a simple Will written or updated free of charge through the campaign.

There is no obligation to leave a gift to charity, but Free Wills Month gives you the opportunity to consider supporting a cause that’s important to you by including a charitable gift in your Will.

Your family and loved ones will, of course, be at the heart of your decisions.

But for some people, leaving even a small gift to a charity they care about can also be a meaningful way to leave a lasting legacy.

If making or updating your Will has been sitting on your to-do list, this could be the perfect opportunity to finally get it sorted.
