Parental Alienation: How Family Mediation can help
Parental Alienation refers to situations where a child's relationship with one parent is damaged due to the influence or behaviour of the other parent. This could be through negative comments, limiting contact, or more subtle emotional pressure.
There is no single definition of parental alienation, but the courts do recognise what are often called 'alienating behaviours'. These are assessed carefully, with the child's welfare being the main priority.
However, Mediation can significantly help.
With a qualified mediator in a supportive environment parents can communicate and work through there differences, focusing on the child's welfare, reducing conflict, giving children a voice, creating effective co-parenting plans and empowering parents to make informed decisions.
Mediation can be a faster and more cost effective way of resolving disputes rather than going to court. This process is much more private and confidential. Mediation could also help identify the problem and work to save the family, mitigating the impact from parental alienation and significantly reduce the likelihood of harm to the child.
Safety in family mediation, ensures a fully qualified mediator will meet individually with each parent at first often called a 'MIAM' session(Mediation information and Assessment meetings). Your mediator will assess your families situation and only proceed with mediation where both parties are voluntarily participating, and mediation is appropriate and safe.
Mediation empowers families giving them the strength to navigate these sensitive situations.
Reaching out can be the first steps to getting help.
