Compliance or Evasion? An Assessment of Tribal Sovereignty in the United States on the Tenth (10th) Anniversary of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

On September 13, 2007, the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The United States initially voted against the resolution but ultimately signaled its acceptance (with conditions) in 2010. This talk will provide an assessment of the state of tribal sovereignty in the US in the modern era, with the Declaration serving as an important touchstone. The talk also takes account of the fact that in 2020, the US will mark the half-century mark of its policy of tribal self-determination. As the title for this talk suggests, there is room for debate as to whether the US is meeting Indigenous expectations for their collective rights of self-determination.

Fund-raising Concert: Nicola Sergio performs for the Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne
Program for the integration of refugee students.
Organised by: Sorbonne Human Rights Association (ADHS)
(During the fund-raising cultural festival ‘Point Bleu’ 19-26 MAY 2017)

Italian compositor and pianist Nicola Sergio will be presenting his album ‘Migrants’ on Friday 19 May 2017 at the Sorbonne University. An album written in context of the present-day migration crisis will be performed in the majestic amphitheatre of Richelieu, an ode to victims of conflict and a message of hope.

Nicola Sergio has kindly responded to the call of the Sorbonne Human Rights Association (ADHS) to collaborate in a fund-raising initiative. The revenue from the charity concert will be generously allocated to the Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne University’s special program for refugee students. The cause of the event immediately resonated with the Italian pianist’s own endeavours, who gladly accepted the invitation to grace the stage with his meaningful album. Based in Paris since 2008, Nicola Sergio has written this album to tackle the issue of immigration in the world. It is his reply to the current chaotic situation, a message of peace.

Concerning the Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne University’s special program for the integration of students from countries at war: The program officially begun on the 28th of September 2015. Spanned over two semesters, it allows students to gain intensive training in French language courses. It prepares them for university life, through an introduction in methodology and disciplines taught at university.
Students are expected to integrate university for a degree after the integration process.

It equally provides legal aid and guidance to students from war-torn regions in order to ensure they are in check with local administration requirements.
A total of 110 Students have benefited from this program for the academic year of 2015-2016.
