Cost of Living in Costa Rica: What Expats Need to Know in 2025

Thinking about moving to Costa Rica? Here’s a quick look at what daily life really costs in 2025 — and where you can save money.

🌦 Exchange Rate & Prices
The colón is strong right now, which means your U.S. dollars don’t stretch as far as they used to. Even though local prices haven’t risen dramatically, everyday costs feel higher when the exchange rate is low.

🏡 Housing
One of the most significant advantages of living in Costa Rica is affordable housing. Renting or buying is still far cheaper than in many parts of the U.S., especially compared to high-demand states like North Carolina.

❄️ Utilities
Electricity can be pricey in beach areas because of A/C. Mini-splits help lower costs. In the Central Valley, many people barely use A/C at all thanks to the cooler climate.

🥗 Food
Restaurant prices are similar to those in the U.S., but local sodas are affordable, and farmers' markets offer incredible fresh produce at low prices. Our family often spent around $40/week at the Jacó market.

🚗 Transportation
Cars are expensive due to taxes, but the good news is you may not need one.
• Uber rides are cheap (Herradura to Jacó is about $5)
• Great public bus system
• Many people use scooters or bikes

🏥 Healthcare
This is where Costa Rica really shines. Medical care is high quality and far more affordable. My daughter’s ER visit in Jacó cost $140 — the same type of visit in the U.S. was $5,000.

🛠 Labor & Services
Domestic help, handymen, gardeners, and construction workers are much more affordable than in the U.S. Skilled workers charge a fraction of American rates, and reliable help is easier to find.

🌴 Final Thoughts

Costa Rica can be more affordable than the U.S. — especially if you embrace the local lifestyle. Shopping at farmers markets, using public transportation, and living outside tourist zones can greatly reduce your monthly expenses.

“One Mistake Many Expats Make”

One common mistake I see expats make in Costa Rica:

Moving here before understanding how different the bureaucracy is.

Everything takes longer:

Banks

Utilities

Residency paperwork

Car paperwork

Legal documents

It’s not bad — it’s just different.
Costa Rica has its own rhythm.

If you come prepared (and patient), you’ll save yourself a lot of stress and enjoy the move much more.

“Little Things I Appreciate About Living Here”

Some of the things I love most about Costa Rica aren’t big or fancy:

🌴 People walking everywhere
🚲 Kids riding old bicycles down the road
🛵 Families on scooters heading to the beach
🐔 Chickens running around yards
🤝 Neighbors stopping to talk
❤️ Strangers that treat you like a friend

It reminds me of a simpler time.
A time when people slowed down and actually lived life.

If you’re tired of the fast pace of the U.S., Costa Rica might surprise you in the best way.

“Costa Rica Time vs. U.S. Time”

If you’ve never experienced “Tico Time,” here’s a quick explanation:

🇺🇸 U.S. Time:
“See you at 10” = You’re there at 9:55.

🇨🇷 Costa Rica Time:
“See you at 10” =
Anywhere from 10:05… to 10:45… maybe 11 if it’s raining. 😄

It took me a little while to adjust, but once you understand the pace of life, it’s actually relaxing. People aren’t in a rush. They aren’t stressed.

If you can embrace it, you’ll love it.
If you fight against it… Costa Rica will drive you crazy.

Adapting is the key.

“What Surprised Me Most About Living in Costa Rica”

What surprised me most when I moved to Costa Rica?
It wasn’t the weather… or the language… or the food.

It was how friendly people are here.

I grew up in Appalachia in the 1980s, where neighbors sat on porches, kids rode bikes everywhere, and people always stopped to talk. Costa Rica feels a lot like that.

People greet you in the street.
They take their time.
Life is slower — in a good way.

If you’re thinking about moving here, the cultural warmth may be one of the best parts of the entire experience.

Pura Vida really does mean something.

Thinking About Buying a Car in Costa Rica? Read This First.

Buying a vehicle in Costa Rica can be exciting — but for many expats, it quickly turns into one of the most frustrating and expensive parts of relocating. Prices are high, parts can take months to arrive, and private sellers often leave out important details.

Here are a few things every American and Canadian expat should know before buying a car here:

👉 Mechanical Inspection Is a Must

Never trust a test drive alone.
Always take the vehicle to a qualified mechanic who can lift it, check for leaks, rust, accident damage, and transmission issues.

👉 Taxes & Legal Transfer Fees

Vehicle transfer taxes are usually around 2.5% of the fiscal value, which is often higher than the price you’re paying.
A Costa Rican attorney who is also a Public Notary must handle the transfer to make it official.

👉 Be Careful With Automatic Transmissions

Many expats learn the hard way that automatic transmissions often fail here, and replacements or repairs can cost nearly as much as the vehicle itself.

👉 Verify Where the Vehicle Was Manufactured

Some models sold in Costa Rica aren’t sold in the U.S. or Canada. That means parts may be hard to find and can take months to arrive.

👉 Avoid Rust-Prone Vehicles

If a car is imported from northern U.S. states or has been driven near the beach, rust damage can become a significant long-term problem.

👉 Private Sellers: Use Extreme Caution

Never send money or agree to a purchase without physically inspecting the vehicle. Too many expats arrive and find something very different from what was advertised.

Need Help?

I've owned five vehicles in Costa Rica and made my fair share of mistakes. If you want guidance on the best vehicle brands, what to avoid, or help with the legal transfer process, our office is here to assist.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐌𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐚 𝐑𝐢𝐜𝐚?

A Personal Journey That Became a Lifelong Love Story
For many North Americans, the dream of living in Costa Rica begins with a single visit — that moment when the tropical air, the sound of the ocean, and the warmth of the people leave an impression that never fades. For me, that journey began twenty years ago with my very first trip to this beautiful country.

𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐚 𝐑𝐢𝐜𝐚
I first heard about Costa Rica from a man named Omar, who worked with me on the ranch. He had lived there for a while, married a Costa Rican woman, and often spoke fondly about the country and its people. Later, while selling real estate in Oregon, I met another couple who had lived on the Caribbean coast. Their stories sparked my curiosity — and before long, I booked my first trip for February 2005.
Back then, things were a little different. I went through a travel agent who arranged everything. My adventure began in San José, Costa Rica’s bustling capital. After a fascinating city tour full of culture and history, I was off to Tamarindo, a place that would later feel like home.
At the Barceló Resort in Langosta, I discovered the Costa Rica everyone dreams about — pristine beaches, warm ocean water, and an abundance of wildlife. I remember the monkeys swinging through the trees, the bright tropical birds, and the soothing sounds of nature.
A sunset cruise from Flamingo became one of my most vivid memories — calm seas, golden light, and an American expat captain sharing stories about his new life in paradise. I knew then that I’d be back.

From there, I traveled north to Arenal, where I soaked in the Tabacón Hot Springs beneath the majestic volcano. The tropical plants, rising mist, and flowing rivers created one of the most relaxing scenes I’d ever experienced.
Then came Monteverde, where the cloud forest meets the sky. The cool air, enormous trees, and the call of toucans and quetzals made it one of the most magical places I’d ever seen.
When I returned to the U.S., I couldn’t stop thinking about Costa Rica. I read everything I could find — books written by expats who had already made the move — and soon returned to study Spanish in San José.

What stood out most to me wasn’t just the landscape — it was the people. The Costa Rican spirit, or Pura Vida, is real. Locals seem happier, less stressed, and genuinely content with life. Even those with modest means carry a warmth and peace that’s contagious.
Over time, Costa Rica became more than a vacation spot — it became home. I met my wife here, and though we spent a few years back in Montana, the call of the tropics never left us. After enduring bitter winters and harsh winds, we decided to return for good.

When we came back, we settled on the Central Pacific Coast, near Jacó and Punta Leona. We lived close to the beach, surrounded by rainforest alive with scarlet macaws, toucans, and playful monkeys. Once, I even saw an ocelot crossing the road — an unforgettable moment.
Life here is simple and fulfilling. Mornings begin with beach walks, afternoons end with breathtaking sunsets, and fresh tropical fruit from the farmers’ market makes healthy living effortless. There are no winters to endure — just a year-round invitation to enjoy life outdoors.
Of course, Costa Rica has changed since my first visit. Roads are better, communities are growing, and expats from across the U.S. and Canada continue to arrive — drawn by the same beauty and tranquility that captured my heart years ago. Yet, the essence of Costa Rica — its kindness, peace, and natural wonder — remains the same.

𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐚 𝐑𝐢𝐜𝐚: 𝐀𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝-𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲

Over the past two decades, Costa Rica has become one of the top medical tourism destinations in the world. Known for its beautiful landscapes, friendly people, and high standard of living, the country also offers something equally valuable—affordable, high-quality healthcare. Medical tourism in Costa Rica attracts thousands of visitors each year who seek procedures that would cost significantly more in their home countries, especially in the United States and Canada.

One of the main reasons Costa Rica has become so popular for medical tourism is the cost savings. Medical procedures in Costa Rica are typically 40% to 70% less expensive than those in the United States. For example, dental implants that cost $4,000 in the U.S. can be completed for around $1,000 in Costa Rica. Cosmetic surgeries, orthopedic procedures, fertility treatments, and even complex heart surgeries are often much more affordable, making the country a top choice for people without insurance or those looking to save money.

However, affordability alone doesn't explain the popularity of Costa Rica's healthcare system. The country also boasts a strong reputation for quality. Many doctors in Costa Rica are trained in the U.S. or Europe and speak fluent English. Clinics and hospitals, especially those that cater to international patients, are equipped with modern technology and follow international healthcare standards. Several private hospitals in the capital city, San José, are internationally accredited, ensuring safety, cleanliness, and expert care.

Another advantage of choosing Costa Rica for medical treatment is the shorter wait times. Patients in countries like the U.S. can wait weeks or even months to see a specialist or schedule surgery. In Costa Rica, appointments can often be made within days, and surgeries can be scheduled quickly. This efficiency especially appeals to patients in pain or who need care urgently.
In addition to cost and quality, Costa Rica's natural beauty and peaceful environment play a significant role in medical tourism. Patients can recover from their procedures while enjoying warm weather, fresh air, and tranquil surroundings. Many medical tourists stay in recovery centers or wellness resorts that provide medical care and relaxation. The idea of healing in paradise is a big part of what draws people to Costa Rica.

Costa Rica also has a well-developed tourism infrastructure. With plenty of hotels, transportation options, and English-speaking guides, the country is easy to navigate for foreigners. Many medical tourism companies offer all-inclusive packages that include travel arrangements, transportation, accommodations, and medical appointments, making the process stress-free.

In conclusion, Costa Rica offers a powerful combination of low costs, high-quality healthcare, short wait times, and a beautiful setting that makes it ideal for medical tourism. Whether patients are seeking dental work, cosmetic surgery, or complex medical treatments, they can often find expert care at a fraction of the cost—while enjoying the warmth and beauty of this Central American gem.

As a foreigner in Costa Rica, knowing what to do in case of a car accident is crucial. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you handle the situation, emphasizing the importance of legal support:

1. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲: Check for injuries and call 911 if anyone needs medical attention.
2. 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭:Notify the Traffic Police (Transito) immediately. It’s important not to move the vehicles until they arrive and document the scene.
3. 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Exchange contact and insurance information with the other party. Take photos of the scene and any damages.
4. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲: Inform your insurance provider about the accident promptly. They will assist you in navigating the next steps.
5. 𝐃𝐨 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐎𝐧-𝐭𝐡𝐞-𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐬: Resist the temptation to settle matters informally. Any agreements made without legal backing can lead to complications later.
6. 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐕𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐬: If the Traffic Police are involved, they will place a lien on both vehicles involved in the accident. This means that the vehicles cannot be sold or transferred until the legal matter is resolved. To have the liens removed, you’ll need to go through a court process, and a judge will decide on the matter.
7. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭 𝐚 𝐋𝐚𝐰𝐲𝐞𝐫: Given the complexities of Costa Rican law, seeking legal counsel is crucial. A lawyer can guide you through the legal process, help you remove liens, and protect your rights.

𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧
Understanding the legal procedures in Costa Rica and having the right legal support is essential. If you're involved in a car accident, ensure you follow the correct steps and consult with a lawyer to protect your interests.
