Can International Students in China Start a Hong Kong Company? πŸ‡πŸ‡°πŸŽ“
The answer is YES βœ….

This video addresses a common concern among international students in China: Will starting a company in Hong Kong affect their study in china? The speaker clarifies that Hong Kong operates under concurrent jurisdiction, separate from mainland China, so their study abroad status remains unaffected. Learn more about understanding law and navigating international business regulations.

Hong Kong is a separate jurisdiction from mainland China. That means starting a Hong Kong company won’t affect your student visa or legal status in China.

Many international students use this structure to:
- Run online businesses 🌍
- Receive payments via PayPal, Stripe & banks πŸ’³
- Start trading with suppliers in China easily πŸ“¦

Payment Gateways vs Fintech Banks – What’s the REAL Difference?

Most entrepreneurs confuse payment gateways like Stripe & PayPal with fintech banks.
οΏ½Here’s the truth:

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡³ Forty years ago, Shenzhen was a fishing village. Today its economy is bigger than Hong Kong's πŸ‘‡

China's answer to Silicon Valley, Shenzhen is the country's technology and innovation capital. Here's why it matters β€” and one crucial thing to understand before setting up a company there.

⚑ China's tech capital
Shenzhen is home to Huawei, Tencent, BYD, DJI and ZTE, plus more than 14,000 high-tech companies. It leads the world in 5G, drones and electric vehicles, and hosts Huaqiangbei β€” the world's largest electronics market.

πŸ’° A top-3 city economy
Shenzhen's GDP hit RMB 3.68 trillion (~US$510 billion) in 2024 β€” overtaking both Guangzhou and Hong Kong. It was China's first Special Economic Zone (1980), is home to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange (one of the world's largest), 10 Fortune Global 500 companies, and the world's 4th-busiest container port. It has led mainland China in exports for over 30 years straight.

🏒 Registering a company β€” and the work-permit catch
A WFOE in Shenzhen lets you trade, issue VAT invoices, clear customs, hire staff and operate at the heart of the Greater Bay Area. But one point really matters:

Work permits in Shenzhen are strict. Immigration usually wants to see a company genuinely operating β€” with real business history β€” before approving a work and residence permit, even for the director. Around 6–12 months of activity is the practical expectation.

The smart approach: register now, run the company remotely (manage the bank from abroad, sign by email, visit on an M business visa), then apply for the work permit later. Note: an M visa is NOT a work permit β€” it doesn't let you work or draw a salary in China.

Need a work permit sooner? Guangzhou is the more straightforward route, with no waiting period.

Like Guangzhou, and unlike Shanghai, Shenzhen requires a physical office to register.

For founders in hardware, electronics, EVs or anything tech, few places match Shenzhen's ecosystem β€” as long as you plan the work-permit timing right.
We help foreign entrepreneurs set up and run companies in Shenzhen, and advise on the best city for your goals.

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡³ Shanghai is China's boardroom. Yiwu is its wholesale bazaar. Guangzhou? It's where the world has come to buy for over 2,000 years πŸ‘‡

The capital of Guangdong province, Guangzhou sits at the heart of the Pearl River Delta β€” the manufacturing engine often called "the world's factory." Here's why it matters, and what you should know about setting up a company there.

πŸ› Home of the Canton Fair
Guangzhou hosts the China Import and Export Fair (the Canton Fair) β€” China's largest and oldest trade show, held every spring and autumn since 1957. In 2024 it drew a record ~500,000 overseas buyers. For importers, it's one of the biggest events in the world.

🏭 The heart of China's manufacturing base
Guangdong has been China's #1 provincial economy for 36 years straight, with a GDP over RMB 14.5 trillion (about US$2.1 trillion) in 2024. Guangzhou's own GDP topped RMB 3.1 trillion (~US$436 billion) β€” and the factories that supply the world (furniture, electronics, apparel, cars and more) are right on its doorstep.

πŸŒ‰ Core of the Greater Bay Area
Guangzhou is a central city in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macau Greater Bay Area β€” a mega-region of 86 million people and a combined GDP of about US$2.1 trillion (the size of Spain), linking Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macau. Add a top-10 global airport and a major seaport, and the connectivity is hard to beat.

🏒 Registering a company in Guangzhou
A WFOE in Guangzhou lets you trade, issue VAT invoices, clear customs, hire staff and sponsor work and residence permits. A few key things to know:

Like Yiwu β€” and unlike Shanghai β€” Guangzhou requires a physical office to register (no virtual-only addresses).

It's notably friendly for founders without a degree: a Category C work permit is possible with a primary/middle/high-school certificate plus about 2 years of relevant experience β€” and unlike Yiwu, Guangzhou does NOT require market purchase receipts.

There's also a points-based pathway, ideal for applicants around 37+ with long professional experience (about 15 years) but no degree β€” though a minimum school certificate is still required.

The standard Category B route (bachelor's + 2 years) is also available.
Office and apartment must both be in Guangzhou and separate; permits take about 3–6 weeks, and full setup around 2–2.5 months.

For a business built on sourcing, manufacturing or trade, few cities match Guangzhou's mix of factories, fairs and connectivity.

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡³ If Yiwu is China's wholesale bazaar, Shanghai is its boardroom πŸ‘‡
Shanghai is the financial and commercial capital of the world's second-largest economy β€” and the #1 gateway for foreign companies entering China. Here's why it matters, and what you should know about setting up a company there.

πŸ’° China's biggest city economy
Shanghai's GDP hit RMB 5.39 trillion (about US$740 billion) in 2024 β€” the highest of any Chinese city. It's home to the Shanghai Stock Exchange, one of the largest in the world.

🚒 The world's busiest port
The Port of Shanghai handled 51.5 million containers in 2024 β€” ranking #1 in the world for the 15th year in a row, and becoming the first port ever to cross 50 million in a single year.

🏒 The gateway for global business
Over 1,000 multinationals base their regional headquarters in Shanghai. It's home to China's first Free Trade Zone (2013), attracts the most foreign investment in the country, and offers the most international environment in China β€” the best international schools, hospitals and expat life. It trades with 200+ countries and leads China in finance, AI, chips and biomedicine.

🏒 Registering a company in Shanghai
A WFOE in Shanghai elevates your brand and gives you direct access to China's largest consumer market β€” letting you trade, issue VAT invoices, open a bank account, hire staff and sponsor work and residence permits. A few key things to know:

A nice contrast with Yiwu: Shanghai is flexible on office space β€” you don't necessarily need a physical office just to register (a real office and a separate apartment are only required when you apply for work permits).

You need at least a Director (Legal Representative), of any nationality, who must visit China for the bank account opening and ID checks. The Supervisor role is now optional.

Up to 50 shareholders of any nationality can join β€” only the Legal Representative needs to visit.

Your business license is valid for 30 years.

Setup usually takes about 20–40 business days (trading companies a little longer).
A Representative Office can only do market research β€” to actually trade and earn revenue, you need a full WFOE.

For startups chasing talent and investors, or established companies seeking scale and prestige, few addresses in Asia carry the weight of Shanghai.

We have offices in Shanghai and help foreign entrepreneurs set up and run companies there.

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡³ The most important Chinese city you've (maybe) never heard of: Yiwu πŸ‘‡
You've almost certainly owned something bought or sold in Yiwu β€” you just didn't know it. This city of two million in Zhejiang province is home to the largest wholesale market on Earth, and it quietly supplies the world. Here's why it matters β€” and what you should know about setting up a company there.

πŸ›’ The world's largest wholesale market
Yiwu's International Trade City (Futian Market) has more than 75,000 shops across five districts and over 6 million square metres β€” with over 2 million different products. Spend 3 minutes at each stall, 8 hours a day, and it would take you over a YEAR to see it all.

πŸŽ„ The "Christmas Capital of the World"
Around 60% of the world's Christmas decorations come from Yiwu.

🌍 It supplies the planet
About 65% of Yiwu's goods are exported, reaching 200+ countries. Direct China–Europe freight trains connect it to 37+ cities (the Yiwu–Madrid route is one of the longest rail lines in the world), and it's a key hub on China's Belt and Road Initiative β€” just 1–2 hours from Shanghai by high-speed rail.

🀝 Open to everyone
Unlike big trade fairs, Yiwu welcomes businesses of all sizes β€” low minimums mean you can buy a single box or a whole container. That's why it's home to a huge, permanent community of traders from the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia and beyond.

🏒 Registering a company in Yiwu
A WFOE in Yiwu lets you export directly, issue VAT invoices, clear customs, and apply for a residence permit as the owner. A few key things to know:

The #1 rule: you need a real, physical office from day one β€” virtual addresses are NOT accepted (for registration or work permits). This is the biggest difference from Shanghai.

Any foreigner (18+) or foreign company from a non-sanctioned country can register.

Both Category B (degree) and Category C (high-school) work permits are available, and applicants must own at least 25% of the company.

A Yiwu-only quirk: work-permit applicants must show genuine purchase receipts from Yiwu market sellers β€” and immigration may call to verify them.

Full setup usually takes about 2–2.5 months.

For a trading business sourcing from China, few places match Yiwu's mix of product variety, accessibility and logistics.

We have a dedicated office in Yiwu and help foreign entrepreneurs set up and run companies there.
