π¨π³ Forty years ago, Shenzhen was a fishing village. Today its economy is bigger than Hong Kong's π
China's answer to Silicon Valley, Shenzhen is the country's technology and innovation capital. Here's why it matters β and one crucial thing to understand before setting up a company there.
β‘ China's tech capital
Shenzhen is home to Huawei, Tencent, BYD, DJI and ZTE, plus more than 14,000 high-tech companies. It leads the world in 5G, drones and electric vehicles, and hosts Huaqiangbei β the world's largest electronics market.
π° A top-3 city economy
Shenzhen's GDP hit RMB 3.68 trillion (~US$510 billion) in 2024 β overtaking both Guangzhou and Hong Kong. It was China's first Special Economic Zone (1980), is home to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange (one of the world's largest), 10 Fortune Global 500 companies, and the world's 4th-busiest container port. It has led mainland China in exports for over 30 years straight.
π’ Registering a company β and the work-permit catch
A WFOE in Shenzhen lets you trade, issue VAT invoices, clear customs, hire staff and operate at the heart of the Greater Bay Area. But one point really matters:
Work permits in Shenzhen are strict. Immigration usually wants to see a company genuinely operating β with real business history β before approving a work and residence permit, even for the director. Around 6β12 months of activity is the practical expectation.
The smart approach: register now, run the company remotely (manage the bank from abroad, sign by email, visit on an M business visa), then apply for the work permit later. Note: an M visa is NOT a work permit β it doesn't let you work or draw a salary in China.
Need a work permit sooner? Guangzhou is the more straightforward route, with no waiting period.
Like Guangzhou, and unlike Shanghai, Shenzhen requires a physical office to register.
For founders in hardware, electronics, EVs or anything tech, few places match Shenzhen's ecosystem β as long as you plan the work-permit timing right.
