1️⃣ Have a Profit Budget:
Know the exact percentage you will save and spend from every contract you get. It could be 10%, 20%, or 30% for savings and 90%, 80%, or 70% for spending. Always make sure your profit from every job follows a budget.
2️⃣ Save More Whenever It’s a Big Contract:
Anytime you get a big contract, don’t make the mistake of living large. Don’t. Instead, save 50% or more of the total profit. That way, even if you don’t get another contract soon, you can comfortably take care of your essentials in the meantime.
3️⃣ Avoid Unnecessary Debts:
Don’t keep borrowing on the premise that “I’ll pay back when I get the next contract.” If you keep doing that, you’ll never be financially free. As much as possible, avoid taking personal loans unless it’s truly a matter of life and death.
4️⃣ Do More Marketing:
It’s a mistake to rely on just one or two regular customers. Don’t put your financial life in the hands of a few people. While you should value your best clients, keep marketing your craft to attract new ones.
5️⃣ Diversify Your Income:
Start a side hustle that generates regular income. There’s no law that says you can’t have more than one source of income. For example, rentals, online sales, or digital services.
6. Plan for Your Retirement Early:
You won’t work all your life. As you grow older, your strength will naturally decline. And as a self-employed person, no one will fund your pension. So, start using voluntary pension schemes (the kind I often write about here).
6️⃣ Get a Land. Build Yourself a Small House:
Even if it’s in your village or a remote area where you can afford it, get a piece of land. You can start farming on it. When you have money to fence it, do so, and trust God as you keep working and saving. You can’t be a tenant forever.
