Many people imagine narcissistic behaviour as obvious aggression, rage, or manipulation. Sometimes it is.

But often, it appears as inconsistency, guilt, emotional withdrawal, conditional support, or apologies that never lead to change.

One of the most common things I hear in mediation and consultations is:

“Everyone else thinks they’re wonderful. Why am I the only one struggling?”

The answer is that harmful relationship dynamics are often experienced differently behind closed doors than they are presented publicly.

This graphic is not a diagnostic tool, and not every difficult person is a narcissist. However, understanding patterns of emotional manipulation can help people identify unhealthy relationship dynamics and make informed decisions about boundaries, co-parenting, and separation.

💔 “He was done with me then.”

Actress Sharon Stone recently revealed that her husband’s reaction to her double mastectomy was the beginning of the end of their marriage.

While every relationship is unique, her story highlights a troubling reality that family lawyers, mediators, and healthcare professionals have been discussing for years:

One widely cited study of found that approximately 20.8% of marriages ended in separation or divorce when the female partner was the patient, compared to 2.9% when the male partner was the patient.

Marriage vows often include the promise to stay together “in sickness and in health.” Unfortunately, statistics suggest that promise is not always experienced equally.

As family professionals, we often see that major health crises don’t create relationship problems—they expose the ones that were already there.

According to a 2019 study conducted by child psychologists in Bethesda, Maryland (USA), which followed both married and divorced families with kids over a 22 year period, children of low-conflict divorce suffer from less instances of PTSD, anxiety, depression and insecure attachment then children from married parents with high conflict.

The study concluded, it is parental conflict, not necessarily divorce which significantly impacts children’s emotional and intellectual development.

Did you know? About 10–12% of new mothers in North America experience some form of domestic violence for the first time, around the time they give birth to their first child.

To understand the scale: that is approximately 18 million women. 18 million.

If someone you love is about to give birth, check in gently but consistently — sometimes the smallest invitation to talk can be the lifeline they need.
