Canada releases its first National Autism Strategy. Read more.

Canada’s first National Autism Strategy was released today. This moment belongs to all of you - Autistic people, families, and the people who love you - who have tirelessly called for recognition and action for decades.
For the first time, the federal government is committed to ensuring Autistic people and their families are fully included in Canadian society, and their challenges are no longer overlooked. This day represents years of hard work and persistence, a testament to your advocacy, lived experiences, and dedication to creating a better future for all Autistic Canadians and their families.

But while this is a step in the right direction, we know it’s only the beginning. The Strategy provides a high level vision, we must ensure that real, concrete actions follow—actions that bring immediate relief and long-term change for families and autistic individuals across the country.

Back in November 2023, Brendon Pooran & former PooranLaw Associate, Madison Pearlman, appeared before the Ontario Court of Appeal on behalf of Community Living Ontario. CLO was granted intervenor status in a case involving a 24-year-old man living with Down syndrome was deemed a ‘Child of the Marriage’ as defined under the Divorce Act. The motion judge made a temporary parenting order, which is used to detail how divorced or separated parents must split parenting time and day-to-day decision-making for their child. Such orders are typically used in cases involving children who are minors. We emphasized how this designation could possibly set a harmful precedent, depriving adults living with intellectual disabilities of their right to live with dignity, autonomy, and independence.

We were thrilled the appeal was granted last week and the motion judge’s order was set aside. This decision will contribute greatly to protecting the rights of people living with intellectual disabilities in our courts. It is a big win for the DS sector!
