You may have seen in the media that the Innu Day Schools class action was certified. Class Action law suits have to be certified by the court before they can go ahead. The decision was released by the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador on Wednesday, August 26, 2026. This is a win for Day Schools case.

However, there is still no compensation available: this decision means the claim can go ahead, but there has been no settlement or court decision about money owing. There is nothing that anyone needs to do right now in order to be included in the claim. If you would like to receive updates by email, please email [email protected].

A class action lawsuit was launched yesterday about abuse suffered in the Day Schools in Davis Inlet, Sheshatshiu and Natuashish. This was filed because Innu have experienced many abuses in the day schools in our communities and that has led to inter-generational trauma. We were left out of other settlements in Canada because we were not under the Indian Act until 2002.

OKT Law and Budden & Associates are representing Innu Nation and 3 of its members in a proposed class action about the schools that operated in the Labrador Innu communities before the Innu took control of their own education system. Between 1949 and 2009, provincial school boards and Catholic-affiliated schools operated in the Innu communities of Sheshatshiu, Davis Inlet and Natuashish.

The case was launched in January 2024 against the Government of Canada and the Government of Newfoundland & Labrador.
