Getting pulled over by the police is stressful, but knowing your legal rights can protect you from self-incrimination and unlawful searches. 🚘🚨
In Alberta, officers have the right to execute a traffic stop to check driver sobriety, confirm vehicle mechanical fitness, or verify insurance and licensing. When stopped, staying calm, remaining respectful, and keeping your hands visible helps keep the interaction safe and controlled.
However, many drivers don't realize where the law draws the line. While you must produce your driver's licence, registration, and insurance, you are not legally obligated to answer probing questions about where you've been, where you're going, or what you've consumed. Furthermore, unless officers have a warrant or clear legal grounds, you do not have to consent to a search of your vehicle. 🛡️
