Canada has expanded its visa-free travel program for eligible citizens of Indonesia and Malaysia, making travel to Canada faster, more accessible, and more affordable for many travellers.

Effective May 26, 2026, qualifying Indonesian and Malaysian citizens may be eligible to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) instead of a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) when travelling to or transiting through Canada by air.

To qualify for an eTA, applicants must either:

• Have held a Canadian Temporary Resident Visa within the past 10 years; or
• Currently hold a valid U.S. non-immigrant visa.

This change is expected to significantly reduce processing times and costs for eligible travellers visiting Canada for tourism, business, studies, or work. However, individuals planning to study or work in Canada must still obtain the appropriate study permit or work permit before travelling.

It is important to note that travellers who do not meet the eligibility requirements will still need to apply for a visitor visa. In addition, all travellers entering Canada by land or sea will continue to require a visitor visa regardless of their eligibility for an eTA.

This update reflects Canada’s ongoing efforts to facilitate travel for trusted and previously screened international visitors while maintaining the integrity of its immigration system.

This update may create new opportunities for eligible Indonesian and Malaysian nationals who wish to visit, study, or work in Canada while benefiting from a simplified travel process.

If you are a citizen of Indonesia or Malaysia and would like to determine your eligibility for an eTA, visitor visa, study permit, or work permit, contact Dawod Immigration for professional guidance and personalized immigration solutions.

Canada has conducted another Express Entry draw through the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) stream.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada issued 3,000 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) to eligible CEC candidates seeking permanent residence.

To qualify for this round of invitations, candidates were required to have:
• A minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 518
• Submitted their Express Entry profile before 3:16 p.m. UTC on April 30, 2026

The Canadian Experience Class remains one of the main pathways for skilled workers with Canadian work experience to transition to permanent residence in Canada.

At Dawod Immigration Firm, we continue to monitor all Express Entry updates and help clients understand their eligibility and improve their CRS scores for future draws.

Canada has conducted a new Express Entry draw targeting Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) candidates, issuing 334 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residence on May 25, 2026.

The minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score required in this draw was 805, marking the highest PNP cutoff score seen in 2026 so far. This draw also issued the fewest PNP invitations since February 2026, highlighting the continued competitiveness of the Express Entry system for provincial nominees.

Notably, this is the second consecutive PNP-specific draw held in May. Since the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) draw on April 28 and the French-language proficiency draw on April 29, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has not conducted any additional CEC, French-language, or category-based rounds of invitations.

For candidates seeking permanent residence through Express Entry, maintaining a competitive profile and exploring Provincial Nominee Program opportunities remains more important than ever.

If you would like to assess your eligibility for Express Entry or a Provincial Nominee Program, contact Dawod Immigration for professional guidance and personalized immigration solutions.

Manitoba and British Columbia continue to create new pathways for skilled workers seeking permanent residence in Canada.

The Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) held Expression of Interest Draw #271 on May 21, 2026, issuing 96 Letters of Advice to Apply (LAAs) for permanent residence. This draw focused exclusively on candidates invited through strategic recruitment initiatives, including the Temporary Public Policy for Prospective PNP Candidates, Employer Services, Ethnocultural Communities, Francophone Communities, and Regional Communities.

Notably, approximately 21% of invited candidates had active Express Entry profiles, providing an opportunity for faster permanent residence processing through the federal Express Entry system.

Meanwhile, British Columbia invited 437 candidates through targeted Skills Immigration draws under its new Innovate: High Economic Impact category. This draw is part of the province's new "Care, Build, Innovate" framework, designed to attract workers and entrepreneurs who can make significant contributions to British Columbia's economy and labour market.

Of the invitations issued, 225 were directed to highly skilled professionals with qualifying job offers and competitive salaries, while 212 invitations went to candidates who met the required registration score threshold.

These provincial nomination programs continue to play a vital role in helping skilled workers and employers address Canada's evolving labour market needs.

If you are interested in immigrating to Canada through a Provincial Nominee Program, contact Dawod Immigration Firm to explore your options and determine your eligibility.

Travel Journal For Permanent and Temporary Residents

If you are a temporary or permanent resident in Canada, keeping track of your travel history is extremely important.

Every trip outside Canada should be recorded — whether by air, land, or sea, including same-day trips to the United States. This information may later be required when applying for:

• A new Permanent Resident Card
• Canadian Citizenship

A travel journal is one of the easiest ways to stay organized and avoid issues or delays in future immigration applications.

Make sure to record:

• The date you left Canada and the date you returned
• The countries you visited
• The reason for travel, such as vacation, work, or family visits
• Any day trips, even if you returned the same day

Keeping accurate travel records can make future applications much smoother and help ensure your residency calculations are correct.

At Dawod Immigration Firm, we help clients stay informed and prepared throughout every stage of their Canadian immigration journey.

A refugee claim is not only about what happened to you — it’s also about how your case is prepared and presented.
At the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, decision-makers carefully assess credibility, consistency, and supporting evidence. Small mistakes can sometimes create major issues in a claim.

Some of the most common problems we see include:
• Inconsistencies in statements or documents
• Missing important details early in the process
• Weak or generic supporting evidence
• Poorly prepared Basis of Claim forms
• Failing to address issues like internal
flight alternatives or state protection
Many people don’t realize that refugee hearings are legal proceedings.

Preparation matters, and how evidence is presented can make a significant difference.

At Dawod Immigration Firm, we focus on building refugee claims strategically from the beginning — ensuring the evidence is clear, consistent, and properly aligned with the legal requirements.

TR to PR Pathway UPDATE :

We now have an update on the TR to PR pathway that was announced earlier this year and unfortunately it is not what most expected . This is not a new portal and it is NOT a new pathway to permanent residency .

This initiative will accelerate the transition of up to 33,000 workers already in Canada to permanent residence between 2026 and 2027.

What this means :

This initiative is dedicated to individuals already in Canada that have established strong economic and community ties while actively contributing to Canada’s economy.

As part of this rollout, IRCC will accelerate the processing of existing permanent residency applications already in the system.

To qualify applicants must :

- Have applied through programs such as the Provincial Nominee Program, Atlantic Immigration Program, community immigration pilots, caregiver pilots, or the Agri-Food Pilot
- Have been living and working in smaller or rural communities in Canada for at least two years

This targeted approach will help address labour shortages across high-demand sectors while strengthening regional economies.

At Dawod Immigration Firm, we continue to monitor these updates closely and support our clients in navigating new and evolving pathways to permanent residence.

Temporary residents in Canada who have lost their status as workers or students now have a new option.

At Dawod Immigration Firm, we want our clients and community to stay informed about important immigration updates.

As of May 1, 2026, updated instructions from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada allow eligible individuals to apply for restoration of status as a visitor.

Previously, individuals who lost their worker or student status were limited to restoring the same status. In many cases, this meant leaving Canada and applying to re-enter as a visitor. This is no longer required.

Now, those who have fallen out of status may apply to restore their status as visitors from within Canada, giving them more time to explore their next steps without needing to exit the country.

Key points to understand:

• Applications for restoration must be submitted within 90 days of losing status
• Applicants must remain in Canada while their application is being processed
• Individuals must stop working or studying immediately once their status is lost
• Applying for restoration does not authorize work or study
• A visitor record application and applicable fees are required

This change provides greater flexibility for temporary foreign workers and international students who may not yet have a pathway to a new permit but wish to remain in Canada legally while they plan their next move.

If you or someone you know has lost their status, it is critical to act quickly and understand your options.

Starting May 1, 2026, important changes are coming to the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) that may affect many newcomers and protected persons in Canada.

At Dawod Immigration Firm, we are committed to keeping our clients informed and prepared.

The IFHP will continue to provide limited, temporary coverage for urgent and essential health services for eligible beneficiaries until they transition to provincial or territorial health care. However, to support long-term sustainability and manage increasing demand, co-payments will now be introduced for certain supplemental services.

Here is what you need to know:

As of May 1, 2026, IFHP beneficiaries will be required to pay:

- $4 for each eligible prescription medication (including refills)

- 30% of the cost for supplemental health services such as dental care, vision care, counselling, and assistive devices

These co-payments must be paid directly to the healthcare provider at the time services are received.

It is important to note that core health services, including doctor visits and hospital care, will remain fully covered with no co-payment required.
We strongly recommend that IFHP beneficiaries:

Continue using healthcare providers registered under the IFHP
Ask about any co-payments before receiving services
Confirm the exact amount they will need to pay
Keep all receipts for their records
These changes are intended to ensure that the IFHP can continue supporting eligible individuals now and in the future.

If you have questions about how this may impact your situation, Dawod Immigration Firm is here to help.
