THINGS YOUR UNIVERSITY DIDN'T TELL YOU: The truth about Canadian Study Permits
Every year, thousands of international students arrive in Canada on study permits β and many are unaware of the rules, rights, and risks attached to their status. This post is for you.
π WHAT IS A STUDY PERMIT?
A study permit is a document issued by IRCC that allows foreign nationals to study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada. Important: a study permit is NOT a visa. Some students need both.
β
WHAT YOU'RE ALLOWED TO DO:
β Study full-time at your designated institution
β Work up to 24 hours per week off-campus
β Work on-campus without restriction in most cases
β Apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) after graduation
β οΈ WHAT MANY STUDENTS DON'T KNOW:
β If you change your school or program, you may need to update your study permit
β Working more than your permitted hours is a serious violation that can affect future immigration applications
β Your study permit has an expiry date β renew it before it expires
β If your permit expires while renewal is being processed, you're covered under "maintained status" β but ONLY if you applied before expiry
β Leaving and re-entering Canada on an expired study permit is not allowed
π THE PGWP PATHWAY TO PR:
After graduating, eligible students can apply for a PGWP (up to 3 years), work in Canada, build Canadian work experience, and then transition to PR through Express Entry or a PNP. This pathway is one of the most reliable routes to Canadian PR β but it requires planning from day one.
