A significant Supreme Court decision from earlier this year is changing the legal landscape for people leaving abusive relationships.

In Ahluwalia v. Ahluwalia, the Supreme Court of Canada recognized a new civil tort of intimate partner violence — meaning a person may now be able to seek financial damages for a pattern of coercive and controlling abuse by an intimate partner.

Importantly, this isn't limited to physical violence. The Court recognized that coercive control can include conduct such as isolation, humiliation, surveillance, financial control, sexual coercion and intimidation.

It also doesn't mean every unhealthy or difficult relationship creates a lawsuit. A person bringing a claim must prove the legal elements of the tort, including intentional abusive conduct that, viewed in context, amounted to coercive control.

The decision marks an important development in Canadian family law and provides another potential legal remedy for people who have experienced intimate partner violence.

What if Canada’s greatest weakness is the quality we celebrate most—our niceness?

Canada's fi***rm laws are headed to the Supreme Court.

Four related appeals are challenging federal regulations that prohibited fi***rms that had previously been legal for licensed ownership and use.

But this isn't simply a case about whether Canada should have gun control.

The Court will consider questions about the limits of federal authority, how the Criminal Code should be interpreted and whether the regulations comply with the Charter.
