"Planning for death and communicating it might be the most important self-care move you ever make."

I was working with a client last week who was getting ready to meet with a lawyer to prepare a Will. She talked about what a weight it has been on her shoulders, not having a Will, not being organized. She was constantly worried that something would happen to her before she met with the lawyer.

Do yourself and your family a favour and get a Will, or make sure yours is current, talk to your family about your wishes, get your information organized. If you're not sure where to start, we can help.

Making plans for one’s death and communicating them gives families a little more space to say goodbye and just grieve.

If you have been named as the Executor in a Will - watch this video. There is a lot to the role and David Chilton (The Wealthy Barber) does a great job explaining it.

The role is time consuming and potentially stressful, especially if you are grieving. You are not obliged to take the role, even if you agreed to it. You can renounce your position, but only before you take any action. There are options out there to hire a professional... and Executors are entitled to compensation whether they are family, friend or professional.

When a loved one dies or is incapacitated, you may wish to access their digital accounts for sentimental items such as photos and videos. These online profiles and accounts are part of your loved one’s ‘digital legacy’.

These accounts often have terms and conditions that mean they are private and not to be shared. This has led to many families not being able to access a loved one’s account after they have passed away.

As a result, some social media companies and internet service providers have put tools in place that allow you to decide how your loved ones can access your accounts should you lack capacity to access them yourself, or after your death.
