My collaborative colleague, Jon Lazar, and I had the privilege of guest lecturing today in the Family Law course at Allard Hall (UBC Law School) teaching the next generation about out of court dispute resolution options like mediation and the collaborative process - so great to meet so many keen law students embracing more humane and holistic ways of practice!

Heading into another mediation tomorrow as the mediator. I remind clients that it is an opportunity to have control over the outcome, since they are creating the agreement themselves, along with their former spouse. As difficult as that can be sometimes, it very often beats leaving decisions about your kids, your money and your lives in the hands of a stranger (a judge or arbitrator). Self determination has great value.

Today is the first official day of work under Renovate Family Law & Mediation. Today I am grateful for all those clients, past, present and future, who allow me to walk alongside them, entering the messiness of a challenging period of life and trusting me to guide and walk with them. I am humbled by the bravery of so many who have set aside urges for revenge and work hard every day to rebuild their life and future. Their future self - and their children, if any - will forever benefit from the healing and growth they make room for during trying times.
