TOKYO — Sanae Takaichi has expressed support for increasing the maximum working hours allowed for students in Japan from the current 28 hours per week to 40 hours, citing growing financial pressures faced by both domestic and international students.

Currently, students on visas are permitted to work up to 28 hours per week during the academic term under immigration regulations. However, rising living costs and tuition fees have sparked debate about whether the limit should be expanded to help students better support themselves.

Takaichi acknowledged the challenges students face and indicated that reviewing the work-hour cap could provide relief. However, no formal policy change has been implemented, and the proposal remains under consideration.

Government officials say further discussions are needed to balance student welfare with academic priorities and labor market concerns.

As of now, the 28-hour weekly limit remains in effect.
