When Shelley’s daughter left for college, feeling a strange mixture of excitement and loss, she smuggled a heartfelt letter into her daughter's suitcase...

It was a dream for Shelley that her daughter would one day go to college. Thrilled and proud, the days before her departure were a frenzy of packing. Yet, mixed up with the excitement was a nagging worry.

"You're so proud, but you're also worried that this framework of your family might crumble when this little piece of your family is separate from you," says Shelley.

Shelley wanted to give her daughter something to carry with her, beyond and more uplifting than a suitcase. So she sat down and wrote a letter, full of love, advice and memories.

She began her letter by talking about their shared past and passions - like their family's strong feelings about airport footwear, their delight in a well-placed semi colon, and their love of Mexican food.

"It is memories of these shared passions which fill my love tank," Shelley wrote.

It was as if they had woven a tapestry together - but, once Shelley's daughter left for college, she'll be weaving new threads on her own.

Shelley's advice was this: "tuck a few family gems into your new side pocket. Leave behind whatever doesn't fit or feels too heavy. Ideally these pocket joys will fill your love tank."

She ended her letter by writing: "we will cheer at your successes, encourage you in unsteady moments, and always, always say, we knew she could do it."

Now Shelley's daughter is thriving at college, and the two continue to communicate through their love language - letters. And Shelley's advice for parents who want to keep up communication with children who are far away?

"You'll always get an answer if you send a picture of a cat!"
