Friday, 30 May 2025 is Fatality Free Friday. An important initiative by the Australian Road Safety Foundation. This annual event highlights the critical need to raise awareness about the dangers of reckless driving habits and inspire positive change in road user behaviour.

Road safety is a matter that affects us all, with profound social, emotional, and economic consequences. Personal injury professionals see the devastating aftermath of road trauma, while victims and their families bear the enduring impact it has on their lives.

By encouraging safe behaviours among all road user, we can make meaningful progress toward reducing transport accident injuries and fatalities on our roads. It is through these efforts that we can foster a safer road environment and work towards a future free from preventable tragedies.

Today on National Sorry Day (26 May 2025), we reflect on the pain and suffering experienced by The Stolen Generation of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise the strength, resilience and courage of the survivors and their families.

National Sorry Day marks the beginning of National Reconciliation Week, which centres around the theme "Bridging Now to Next" in 2025. This theme highlights the enduring connection between the past, present, and future, and serves as a call for all Australians to move forward together in the spirit of reconciliation. As we reflect today on the lessons of history, we are also reminded of our collective responsibility to shape a more inclusive and equitable future.

Let us listen, learn, and walk together toward genuine healing and lasting change.

Today is National Pro Bono Day.

We take this opportunity to recognise and celebrate the legal professionals who generously give their time and expertise to support those who might otherwise face barriers to accessing legal assistance.

At Redlich’s, we are guided by Peter Redlich’s enduring belief that lawyers have a responsibility to help shape a fair and just society. This principle continues to inspire our commitment to pro bono work and to supporting vulnerable members of our community.

On National Pro Bono Day, we proudly reaffirm our dedication to making legal support more accessible because everyone deserves a fair chance at justice.

Today marks the start of Victorian Law Week 2025, a week dedicated to helping Victorians better understand their legal rights and responsibilities, learn what help is available, and how our legal system works.

Running from 19 to 25 May, this important initiative shines a light on how the law intersects with everyday life and why accessible legal information matters, particularly for those outside the legal profession.

At Redlich’s, we know that navigating the legal system can be daunting. That’s why we’re committed to making the process clearer and more accessible for injured Victorians. Our focus is providing easy-to-understand legal information to empower our clients and community every step of the way.

Throughout the week, events are being held across the state and online to help build legal knowledge and encourage people to make informed decisions. You can learn more here: https://www.viclawweek.org.au

Today marks the commencement of National Road Safety Week (11–18 May), an important annual campaign dedicated to reducing preventable injuries and fatalities on our roads.

At Redlich’s, we recognise the profound impact road trauma has on our clients and their loved ones. We are committed to promoting safer roads and encouraging responsible driving behaviours.

According to the National Road Safety Week website, some of the ways you can are to:
• Eliminate distractions and keep your mobile phone out of reach while driving
• Adhere to speed limits and adjust your speed according to road conditions
• Don’t drive tired or under the influence
• Be mindful of all road users

Whether you're driving a car, walking, or riding a bicycle or a motorcycle, you can minimise distractions and practice road safety so everyone makes it home safely every day.

We pledge to and invite you to join us in taking the pledge. By making small changes in our daily habits, we can collectively make a significant difference.

Today we commemorate World Day for Safety and Health at Work and Workers' Memorial Day and recognise the unique risks to workers that have arisen alongside the rise of digitalisation and artificial intelligence use in the workplace. This year’s theme shines a light on the psychosocial hazards faced by workers due to the decrease in interpersonal interactions and increased workloads arising from remote or isolated work, poor physical environments and inadequate support and training.

To honour Victorians who have tragically lost their lives at work in the past year, members of our team attended the International Workers' Memorial Day event held by the Victorian Trades Hall Council. Premier of Victoria Jacinta Allan, Melbourne Lord Mayor Nick Reece, Acting WorkSafe CEO Ashley West and Luke Hilakari from Trades Hall discussed the importance of health and safety in the workplace so that all workers can make it home safely to their loved ones each and every day.

The moving ceremony today serves as an important reminder of why we need to work together to remember the dead, fight like hell for the living.

If you have been injured at work, on the road or in a public place, it is crucial to understand your options for making a personal injury claim. Depending on the severity of your injury and how it occurred, you may be able to access compensation for your medical and like expenses, loss of income, and pain and suffering.

In her recent Guide to Personal Injury Claims, Practice Director Catherine Sim discusses the different types of personal injury claims, potential pathways to compensation, and the importance of building a strong case to maximise the client’s entitlements: https://redlichs.com.au/the-complete-guide-to-personal-injury-claims-maximise-your-compensation

Welcome back to this week's edition of Frequently Asked Questions with Redlich's. Today we'll explore a commonly asked question for WorkCover claims.

Question: I have been injured at work - what should I do?

Answer: If you have been injured at work, you should seek any medical treatment necessary. You will also need to notify your employer within 30 days of you becoming aware of your work-related injury. If you incur medical expenses and need time off work, you'll need to complete a Worker's Injury Claim Form and provide it to your employer.

Read below to find out more.

If you’re wondering whether you’re eligible to make a WorkCover claim, or you have further questions, please contact us on (03) 9321 9988 or at https://redlichs.com.au/contact-us to speak to a member of our legal team.

Do you know your return to work obligations after sustaining a work-related injury? You may be wondering whether you can be forced back to your pre-injury duties while you are still recovering. Returning to work can be a challenging time for an injured worker, and it is important you have the appropriate support and assistance throughout the process.

The good news is you cannot be forced back to work if you are not ready. However, you do have return to work obligations you must comply with as part of the return to work process and failing to meet these obligations can lead to the suspension or termination of your weekly payments.

Returning to work does not require you to be at your pre-injury capacity or to have finished medical treatment. You can return to work at any stage throughout your recovery process, even if you are subject to limitations and restrictions.

Creating a Return to Work Plan is a compulsory step and forms part of your obligation for your return to work journey. This involves liaising with your treating practitioners, your employer and your occupational rehabilitation service provider to guide you through a coordinated approach and to oversee your treatment, recovery and return to work, whilst still prioritising your health and well-being.

You can learn more about the return to work process and your obligations here: https://redlichs.com.au/getting-back-to-work-after-an-injury
