Mabo Day || 3 June 2026

Today, we commemorate Mabo Day and honour the legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo, whose determination and advocacy helped transform Australia’s legal landscape.

Mabo Day marks the anniversary of the landmark High Court of Australia’s, Mabo Decision, which recognised the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to their traditional lands and waters. This important decision overturned Australia’s previous legal fiction of terra nullius (land belonging to no one).

AFLSQ acknowledges the strength, resilience, and enduring connection that First Nations peoples have to Country, culture, and community. We recognise the significance of this decision in advancing justice, and the ongoing work required to uphold and protect the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Today, we reflect on the courage of those who fought for recognition, celebrate the achievements made, and recommit ourselves to supporting self-determination, truth-telling, and equitable access to justice.

Reconciliation Week || 27 May 2026 – 3 June 2026

Today, members of our team, Dionne, Carla, and Ryleigh, kicked off Reconciliation Week 2026 by representing AFLSQ at the 2nd Annual Primary Interschools Reconciliation Touch Football Carnival 2026. The carnival was held at Glenvale State School, Toowoomba and AFLSQ was a proud sponsor of this event. The day brought young people together through sport, respect, teamwork, and reconciliation.

This year’s National Reconciliation Week theme, “All In,” reminds us that reconciliation is everyone’s responsibility and that real change happens when we stand together and take action.

The carnival celebrated connection, learning, and unity, while honouring the journey of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Through sport, students build friendships, strengthen community ties, and walk forward together with understanding and respect.

We’re honoured to stand alongside local schools, students, families, and communities in supporting the next generation to lead with courage, inclusion, and strength.

DFV Stakeholder’s Dinner || 14 May 2026

On 14 May 2026, our team proudly attended the DFV Stakeholder’s Dinner held at Kingaroy RSL, with more than 110 community members, services, and stakeholders coming together in support of ending domestic and family violence.

The evening was a powerful reminder of the importance of collaboration, connection, and collective action in creating safer communities for women, children, and families impacted by DFV. Events like these strengthen partnerships, raise awareness, and reinforce our shared commitment to prevention, advocacy, and culturally safe support services.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate members of our team for their recognition on the night:

✨ Ainsley was nominated in both the Exemplary Practice and Going Above and Beyond categories, proudly receiving a Certificate of Achievement for Going Above and Beyond, along with an Acknowledgment of Nomination for Exemplary Practice.

✨ Andra was nominated in the Going Above and Beyond category and received an Acknowledgment of Nomination for this same category.

AFLSQ congratulates all nominees and award recipients whose dedication continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by domestic and family violence. Together, we continue the work of building stronger, safer, and more connected communities.

National Sorry Day || 26 May 2026

Today, on National Sorry Day, we pause to honour the strength, survival, and resilience of the Stolen Generations, their families, and their communities.

We acknowledge the pain and trauma caused by the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, their culture, and their Country, and the ongoing impacts still felt today.

As an Indigenous legal service, we stand committed to truth-telling, justice, healing, and walking alongside our communities with cultural respect and integrity. We recognise the importance of listening to survivors, protecting future generations, and continuing the fight for culturally safe systems and accountability.

Today, we remember.

Today, we listen.

Today, we stand in solidarity.

Bamba Mari Graduation || 12 May 2026

Today, we proudly celebrate the graduates of our Bamba Mari men’s program—strong men who have shown courage, commitment, growth, and resilience throughout their journey.

Graduating from this program represents more than completing sessions; it reflects a commitment to healing, accountability, culture, family, and creating stronger futures for themselves and their communities.

We acknowledge the strength it takes to reflect, learn, and make positive change. Every step taken throughout the program is a step toward breaking cycles, strengthening connections, and walking forward with pride and purpose.

To our graduates—we are incredibly proud of each one of you. Your dedication, honesty, and willingness to grow have not gone unnoticed. We honour the journey you have taken and the example you continue to set for your families, communities, and the next generation.

Thank you to everyone involved in supporting this important program and creating culturally safe spaces for healing and change.

Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month || 1 May 2026 – 31 May 2026

This month, we stand with our communities to say: enough is enough.

Domestic and family violence has no place in our homes, our families, or our futures. For many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, this harm is felt deeply, but so is our strength, our resilience, and our connection to culture.

We honour the voices of those who have spoken up, the courage of those still finding their way, and the communities and services working every day to keep our people safe. We will continue to speak up for the voices that have not been heard and for those who have slipped through the cracks of the system.

Our service is here to walk alongside you, providing culturally safe legal support, advocacy, counselling, our men’s group (Bamba Mari), and a safe space where you are heard without judgement.

You are not alone; your story matters; your safety matters.

If you, or someone you know, need support, please reach out. Together, we can break the cycle and build stronger, safer communities and families, for our future generations.

ANZAC Day || 25 April 2026

Today, we honour service, sacrifice, and truth.

On this ANZAC Day, AFLSQ acknowledges and pays our deepest respects to all who served, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who have served in all conflicts—often without recognition, and always with strength.

As a legal service, we recognise that many of our people returned from war to ongoing injustice at home. The fight for justice did not end on the battlefield—it continues today in our communities, our Courts, and our voices.

We stand with our Elders, our veterans, and our communities in truth-telling and in the ongoing pursuit of justice, equality, and respect.

We remember those who served.

We honour those who continue to fight for justice.

Lest We Forget.

Close the Gap Day || 19 March 2026

Today we stand in solidarity for Close the Gap Day—a day that calls for action, accountability, and justice.

For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the gap is not just measured in life expectancy. It is felt in access to healthcare, in systemic inequality, and in the ongoing impacts of colonisation.

At AFLSQ, as an Indigenous legal service, we see firsthand how these inequities intersect with the justice system. Health, wellbeing, and justice are deeply connected—when one is denied, all are affected.

We acknowledge the strength, resilience, and leadership of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities who continue to fight for change. We honour the voices that have long called for equity, self-determination, and culturally safe services.

Closing the gap requires more than just words. It demands meaningful action, community-led solutions, and a commitment to listening—truly listening.

Today, and every day, we stand with our communities. Because justice should never depend on who you are, or where you come from.
