Last week, I spoke to the commencing law students from Griffith University on behalf of the . I spoke to them about the admirable work they would do, should they eventually choose to join the solicitors branch.

University is a time to consider career pathways, without the pressure of having to make life-long binding decisions.

Some pointers that I shared:-

-Take opportunities whenever they present themselves, even if they don't look as you imagined.
-Deadlines will rule your life as a solicitor, best to start abiding by them during university and submit your assignments on time. It is an invaluable skill.
-Try before you buy, areas of law, volunteer, paid administrative work, different locations. All of these will allow you to decide exactly whether you want to apply for admission, and if so, what areas of law you may want to work in. The study of law and the practice of it are two very different things.

Above all, I reminded them that everyone has opportunities, but not everyone will use them.

I was very grateful for the opportunity to share some tid-bits of (hopefully) wisdom. Thank you to Griffith University for the opportunity.

Thinking about separation? Before you say the words, do these 5 things:

1️⃣ Take copies of financial documents (records you might need to understand what your property pool is and how you acquired it)
2️⃣ Understand your superannuation position (save your member number and login details)
3️⃣ Consider living arrangements (think about what might be best for any children or pets, as well as whether either of you have any special needs or business interests at the home)
4️⃣ Avoid emotional text messages (don't say it unless you want it to appear in an affidavit read by a Judge)
5️⃣ Get legal advice early

The decisions you make at the beginning can shape the entire outcome. That's why I am proud to work with a team of fantastic family lawyers who can assist you with legal advice - even before you separate.

A very thought provoking and uplifting keynote speech yesterday from Daniel Principe at the Queensland Law Society Legal Profession Breakfast. The conversation around the impact of social media on young people and, among other things, their perception of gender roles was an insightful one.

Congratulations to Jason Garrick who was awarded the Dame Quentin Bryce Domestic Violence Prevention Advocate Award. This award is recognition of your grassroots work in the domestic violence space everyday. Thank you for the work you do.

Raising $163,000 for the Women’s Legal Service Queensland was pretty amazing too.

All in all, a wonderful morning. ⭐️

I’m proud to share that I have nominated for the role of Deputy President in the upcoming Queensland Law Society Council Election.

Putting my hand up for this position is something I’ve considered with care. Over the past 18 months, I’ve had the privilege of serving on Council—an experience that’s deepened my understanding of both the opportunities and the challenges facing our profession.

As a family lawyer based in Toowoomba, I bring a strong regional perspective. I know what it means to practise at the coalface, to navigate the realities of legal practice in smaller communities, and to balance professional duties with a deep commitment to the people we serve.

What motivates me most is connection. I believe QLS should be accessible, engaged, and representative of its diverse membership. That means giving regional practitioners a strong voice, ensuring early-career lawyers are supported, and advocating for the integrity and sustainability of our profession at every level.

This election is an opportunity to shape the future of our profession—and I would be honoured to have your support.

Navigating parenting arrangements can be complex. Understanding your rights and responsibilities is crucial. Here are some quick insights to help you through the process:

- best interests of the children are paramount;
- the Court considers the safety of children when deciding arrangements that are in a child's best interests;
- agreements can be recorded in an unenforceable Parenting Plan or an enforceable Court Order;
- parents are required to attend mediation, unless an exemption is applied and granted from the Court.
