Sketch & Scribble [ ] WE are enthusiast and advocates of Children’s work of art. From this kind of focus comes success, and from success comes praise from others.

About
Sketch & Scribble founded by Chris&Lynette in 2002 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia -
started off as a creative studio for children age 5-18 to explore and build their creativity and independence through art. Fast forward and now we are a family of 5 with two children age 8 & 6, a pet named Wafle and a superb ensemble cast of grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, neighbors and friends. As an enthu

siast and advocates of Children’s work of art, we would like to share this journey with more parents and children online. WE sincerely invite you to join us in hands to advocate, inspire, and be inspired to continue the creative journey in any ways and forms with your children...

[OUR PHILOSOPHY]

Be happy in creating & create a happy place! WE BELIEVE ~ that every child is born an artist and that somehow, they lose the ability to think creatively when they reach adulthood. Sketch & Scribble urge to encourage and guide parents to find their inner artist and providing their children with simple ways to express themselves and problem solve. OUR GOAL ~ to create moments in childhood whereby a child can experience flow, a single-minded immersion in an activity that creates a feeling of spontaneous joy. Praise from others (peers, teachers, coaches) in childhood is the key to adult happiness. Ahhhh…so simple! OUR WISH ~ to create products that help families imagine, create and play together. For families to create memories of a home filled with art, crafts, imaginative plays, storytelling, music, books, crafts, games, baking, singing, dancing, dress-up, movie night, cartwheels, fireflies, kisses, hugs, tooth fairies and smoothies...

[OUR PRODUCTS]

Our kits are designed to help fuel young imaginations and open new paths to discovery. Young users are invited to use their own initiative at every stage of the activity - from the materials they'll use, to the ways they'll play with it. Once they start, there's no end to the possibilities young minds can come up with.

:: Imaginative kits - DIY kit to fuel imaginations & discovery.

:: Old school fun kits – It provides snippets of valuable Asian heritage fun facts and learning the children’s games in Asia. It is a valuable cultural heritage that we yearn to preserve.

:: *Travel kit – These kits are kept simple, light weight and with non-prohibited materials on board;
NO glue / liquid, NO cutting tools, NO sharp materials. These kits encourage off screen and bonding time during those long hours travels! (*Tried and tested with our children since aged 2 & 4 to recent - Especially during long hours air flight / train)..

P/S:: WE would love you to…
Take a moment next time you stumble upon a child's 'work' and ask them about it ... We assure you, they will be on.top.of.the.world and with the brightest smiles to tell you their endless imaginative stories based on those creations :)..

Love & Cheers;

🧬 P R O C E S S ART 🧬
WHY it is important for adult? ..
🔮 Most adults (and educators, including myself 😅) grapple with the ideas of implementing art-related activities including ways/methods to support children during the process. .
🔮Process art allows room to be ourselves, make our own decision, take challenges, experiment with materials including conventional and contemporary type, emotional expression, and develop skills such as coordination, sensory.
🔮The experience during any process-oriented art is a gift of new discoveries, self-expression, facilitate genuine creativity, and relaxation. These significant qualities guide adults (and educators) to self-reflect, develop first-hand understanding and skills to assist themselves in supporting young children’s artistic literacy. .
🔮The key is when adults undertake their own learning process and adopt reflective practice about art processes, techniques and use of resources ... it helps us in gaining confidence and skills for implementing process art with young children.

The seasons changed on Earth yesterday; March 20!
🍁🍂Autumn equinox for us here in the Southern Hemisphere 🍁🍂
There are two equinoxes every year – in March and September – when the Sun shines directly on the equator and the length of night and day are nearly equal; 12 hours, all over the world. That leads to longer days (and the start of spring!) in the north and shorter days (and autumn) in the south.
That all happens, of course, whether we take note of it or not. The autumnal equinox can be about scientific curiosity, cultural and family traditions, spirituality, or a mix of the three. Taking any of those approaches, the equinox can help us consider our place as humans in this vast, amazing world.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 We observed the sunset 🌄 yesterday that leads to the the Supermoon 🌕 later on the night. We ended our day with a grateful heart and we say our thanks 🙏 to a wonderful Summer we all had - to hold and to cherish.
And now, we welcome Autumn🍁 with an open heart, with gratitude.
🍁🍂🍁🍂
Summer is at a close and it is time
to reap what we have sown

As the sun sets earlier and
the wind and rain blow the
leaves from the trees,
we are reminded that it is
time to let go.

We are at a gateway
to a new season, a new cycle;
in the circle of life.

Step into the circle and give
thanks as we gather the
harvest that will sustain us
through the darkness of winter.

Involving C H I L D R E N
👶🧒🏻👦🏼🧑🏾👧🏻 in the making of dough encourages them to use their mathematical and scientific skills.
⚖️⚡️Mathematical skills are prompted to measure and ensure the right amount of ingredients will be used to make the playdough.
🥣🧪Scientific skills are developed by understanding that by mixing different items you can create a colourful and fun item prompting play, creation and learning.
🤸‍♀️The process of making the play dough is often more fun than the result 😉
Just being in the moment of kneading, moulding and shaping can be very relaxing and allow children to calm and relaxed for the days’ activities.
💡When was the last time you sat and played with playdough? .
Perhaps you could make some today! A simple, easy and colourful stress ball! 🔴⚪️🔵
⚡️How to make this no-cook and taste-safe play dough⚡️
Making playdough is an easy and fun activity with children. Children will love to play and be creative with this no-cook and taste-safe recipe.

2 cups plain flour (or gluten free flour)
2 cups water
1 cup salt
1 teaspoon of food colouring

⚪️ D O U G H play ⚪️
I love its versatility with young children. It is certainly a childhood staple and my T O P-rated T O O L for Fine Motor Development + hand strengthening in young children.

⚡️Playdough is great for developing fine motor skills like intrinsic muscles strength, finger isolation, tripod grasp development, thumb opposition, opening up the web space, bilateral hand coordination, and more.
⚡️What is intrinsic muscle strength?
There are seventeen muscles in the hand that are responsible for fine motor skills and precision grasp, among other things like moving the thumb and fingers. There are different groups of intrinsic muscles and they allow us to grasp items in a functional way. These same muscles are used for later skills such as cutting with a scissors, using a tweezers, and holding a pencil.
One of the activities that is great for developing young children’s intrinsic muscle strength of their little hands is ….
⚪️Rolling D O U G H into B A L L S⚪️

:: For this simple activity, children create small round balls of dough.
:: I encourage young children to roll small balls using just their thumb and fingers. Rolling small balls of this size uses the intrinsic muscles that are responsible for moving the thumb and the muscles that bend the fingers at the knuckle. Also needed for a task like this are the palmer interossi muscles that work to move the fingers in a flexed position toward the thumb.
:: So, when a child is rolling a small ball of dough with their thumb and fingers, they are working on strengthening the muscles that use to write and colour with a pencil or crayon.

T A S T E S A F E + N O-C O O K 🍫COCOA PLAY DOUGH🍫
- CREEPY CRAWLY, BUGS FOSSIL
⚡️Benefit of Imaginative play - Free self expression, creativity, motor expression, social participation, emotional well-being
⚡️By providing with a range of textures, colours and shapes, children are provided with experiences and engage with the world around them! .
🌈Here’s our recipe🌈
2 cups plain flour (or gluten free flour)
1 cup cocoa powder (we bought ours from Coles)
2 cups water
1 cup salt .
INSTRUCTIONS
:: Mix the flour, cocoa powder and salt in a bowl
:: Add water into mixture, mix/whip well *you may add more or less water depending on the consistency you prefer
:: Turn dough mixture out onto the table and knead until all ingredients have blended and formed a ball of dough!
⚡️We BAKED some of our ‘fossils’ - stamped and pressed some plastic bugs on some dough and remove leaving an imprint. Place the ‘fossils’ onto baking tray lined with baking paper and bake for a few minutes till slightly harden (preheat oven to 180degree) *You May also place the ‘fossils’ at a sunny dry space for several hours (or days) to allow the dough to completely dry out and garden. .

🧪🧬 E P S O M salt C R Y S T A L ❄️
What you need:
:: Epsom salt (2 cups)
:: Water (2 cups)
:: Food colouring (optional) *You can add more for darker tone
:: Glass jars (2 - 3 jars)
* Optional - String + Metal screw / nut for weight + pencil
Here's How
:: Boil the water in a pot, on the stove.
:: Remove the water from heat and add the Epsom salts. Stir the mixture until the salt is fully dissolved. *You may add in food colouring at this point
If you have floating sediment (common if using impure Epsom salt), you can pour the liquid through a coffee filter to remove it. Use the liquid to grow the crystals and discard the coffee filter. *I had included in some small amount of the sediment
:: Pour the mixture into a glass jar / container and leave it to cool in room temperature and then transfer to the refrigerator.
:: We left it overnight and check on it the next morning .

🌈 D R I P painting ||
This sensory experience always draw my children and students into an immersive experience that is endless. Just like we would make use of unconventional tools such as sticks, leaves, fingers, chopsticks, and even hardened brushes to create energetic abstract art!
WE use flour to make this homemade paint (Due to gluten intolerance. You may also choose to use regular plain flour) and love how we had thickened the paint texture to create those thick swirls and grooves of abstract lines and shapes. 😻

from the local library - L I F E with P I C A S S O by Francoise Gilot and Carlton Lake
Due to a superbly busy life-mix (let’s be real, who is not 😂); mum duties to a 12 YO and 10YO (thank goodness they are much independent at these age), an on-going study that feels like never ending with research and thesis papers, being a pre-school teacher, teaching Art&Craft (this is my amazing grace!), and everything else in between... 😅. 🦠I am feeling the crunch 😬
🦠I felt that my creativity is STAGNANT!!! 🦠I am freaking out that my creativity is STAGNANT!!! .
☄️Popular perception is that creativity and old age do not mix. Creativity is the domain of the young.. and to certain extent this is true, yet not in the way that many of us would expect.
☄️The youthful decline
Our decline in creativity does not start when we are 40 or 50. It starts around about the the age when we enter school!
☄️The alarming decline
At around about the age of five, we are using about 80% of our creative potential.
But, by the age of twelve, our creative output has declined to about 2% of our potential, and it generally stays there for the rest of our lives. ☄️ Scholastic thinking
Schools.. drill conformity into us. We learn that there is one ‘true way of thinking’, ‘one right answer’ for every problem, and that this is the one in the teacher's head. Success is based on knowing what is wanted, not what is interesting. At University, we learn to reference every assertion and never, never to question the wisdom and ultimate knowledge of our professors. 🌟B U T, In actual fact, it is our "Habitual ossification"; where creativity does fade away when we do not use it. 'Use it or lose it', as they say. One of the biggest culprits! Once we start doing something one way, we get comfortable with it and then do not change or vary it!

Transformation from
📄 ✏🖌 to 📲 🖥
Just like that, my eldest at age 11 now... started drawing figurine using application! In her own words, "It is simple to use with minimal fuss and absolutely no need for any erasing!" 😅
I see that she explores with ease through the app on variety of head tilt, face angle and dimension... All within a setting!
But I am a believer in practice with pencil ✏ + 📄
Finding a balance in learning with 21st century children?
Any suggestions?
