Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning) is being shut down for international students

15,772 international students are sitting in a course that can no longer take a new enrolment.

▪▪▪

From 5 September 2026, a new instrument under the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act 2000 lists BSB80120 Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning) as a specified course. That switches on the automatic suspension and cancellation powers.

What happens now:

▸ 30 days after commencement, any provider still teaching overseas students in this course has its registration for that course automatically SUSPENDED
» students already enrolled can keep studying until they finish or withdraw
» no new students. No recruiting, no enrolling, no accepting

▸ once the last student leaves, registration for the course is automatically cancelled
» every Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) issued for a future start date must be cancelled

▸ while the instrument stands, no provider can apply to register, renew or add this course

SUBCLASS 485 GRADUATE VISA ALERT.

Study breaks do NOT automatically mean refusal.

But if you are planning your next course or relying on the 485 pathway, the timing, length and evidence behind your study gap can matter.

THE TRUTH ABOUT STUDY BREAKS ▸ CHECK THESE THREE THINGS.

ONE ▸ A study gap is NOT automatically a refusal

A reasonable gap can be accepted.

But your break should have a clear explanation — such as compassionate, compelling or academic circumstances.

TWO ▸ Duration & timing matter

An unreasonable or poorly explained break can affect your 485 pathway.

Your subsequent course will generally need to start in the same or next academic year, depending on your circumstances.

THREE ▸ DOCUMENTATION IS CRITICAL

Don’t just explain your gap. PROVE IT.

Keep strong supporting evidence showing why the break happened.

Poorly documented study gaps can create serious visa concerns.

NORTHERN TERRITORY IS OPEN.

The nomination portal opened 21 August 2026. And there are 200 more places than last year.

Here are the numbers:
▪▪▪

THE ALLOCATION ▸ 1,850 places

Sc 190 Skilled Nominated ........ 850
Sc 491 Skilled Work Regional ... 1,000
Total 2026-27 ........................... 1,850
Total 2025-26 ........................... 1,650

Every extra place went to the 491. It moved from 800 up to 1,000. The 190 did not move at all.

FIVE THINGS THAT CHANGED. CHECK YOUR FILE AGAINST EACH ONE.

ONE ▸ Offshore NT Priority Occupation stream is CLOSED
Not paused. Closed to new applications. There is a backlog carried over from last year.

TWO ▸ Full time now means 35 hours a week
With a Northern Territory employer. Good news here, you can build it from more than one part time job.

THREE ▸ Remote work generally will NOT count
Working from the NT for an employer based somewhere else does not cut it, unless the duties actually service Northern Territory clients.

FOUR ▸ NT Graduates in the 190 stream, the bar moved
Relying on job search instead of employment? You now need TWELVE months residence after course completion. It used to be six.
Over 35 and not eligible for a 485? You must now show employment or a recent job offer.

There are two new ways out. Three months employment in a regional or remote area outside Greater Darwin. Or employment, or a job offer, in a designated critical sector.

FIVE ▸ NT Family stream, offshore applicants
You now need a written statement or a family tree diagram showing the claimed relationship. Put it in the file from day one.

ImmiAccount planned system maintenance - payment!

The Department will be performing system maintenance that will affect payment functionality in ImmiAccount on Sunday 23 August 2026 between 9:00 am and 7:00 pm (AEST).

Members will still be able to start, edit, and attach documents to a Visa
or
Citizenship application, but may not be able to make a payment or submit an application during the maintenance period.

That extra 1.4% you pay on your visa fee? It may be about to disappear.

From 1 October 2026, the Reserve Bank of Australia is banning card surcharges on debit, prepaid and credit card payments across the eftpos, Mastercard and Visa networks.

That is the outcome of its Review of Merchant Card Payment Costs and Surcharging.

Why this matters to visa applicants

Almost everyone pays the Visa Application Charge by card through ImmiAccount. And right now, that payment carries a surcharge on top of the fee itself.

On a large family application, that surcharge is not small change.

So what happens on 1 October?

The honest answer is that nobody can say yet.

The MIA asked the Department of Home Affairs directly. The Department said it is working through how to give effect to the decision, and that the final arrangements still need Government consideration and approval.

More information will follow once it is available.

What this means for you right now

Nothing changes today. Keep budgeting the surcharge into your quotes and into what you tell clients to have ready.

But if you have a client sitting on a very large application and no deadline pressure, October is worth a thought.
