Planning to drive or ride a bike in Australia? 🚗🚲

Many Japanese nationals who start driving in Australia are shocked by one thing in particular: the insanely high traffic fines…!

“I just glanced at my phone while stopped at a red light.”
“I was only riding my bike a short distance, so I didn’t wear a helmet.”

Actions that might be overlooked or lightly penalized in Japan can result in massive fines ranging from hundreds to over a thousand dollars in Australia.

Here is a summary of common traffic rule traps that working holidaymakers and international students often fall into:

🔹 Traffic on the right always has right-of-way at roundabouts
🔹 Using your phone while stopped at a red light is illegal (fines exceed $1,000 in some states)
🔹 Riding a bicycle or e-scooter without a helmet results in an immediate fine
🔹 Speed enforcement is extremely strict, especially in school zones (40 km/h limit) and speed camera zones
🔹 Always check the numbers on "P" parking signs and the enforced time zones before parking on the street

Australia’s traffic monitoring systems and enforcement cameras are far more advanced than you might expect.

Don’t let a simple “I didn’t know” cost you hundreds of dollars! If you plan to drive or ride a bike, save this post to review whenever you need it.

"What should I do if I get sick in Australia...?"

Australia’s healthcare system is very different from Japan's. To avoid panicking when something happens, it's essential to understand how medical care works before you arrive or while you're still healthy!

In Australia, instead of going straight to a large hospital, your first step is usually visiting a local clinic known as a "GP" (General Practitioner).

You might have heard that "healthcare is free in Australia," but this only applies to locals covered by Medicare—it doesn't apply to Working Holiday makers or international students.
That’s why having overseas travel insurance, Student Health Cover (OSHC), or Working Holiday Insurance (OVHC), and checking your coverage details in advance, is a must!

📌 Key takeaways from this post:
• How to choose between a GP and Emergency (ER)
• 4 essential documents needed for insurance claims
• Important rules about ambulance fees (which vary by state)
• Useful English phrases at the hospital and pharmacy

When converting a Japanese driver's license in Australia, applying for a visa, or submitting documents like family registers or police certificates to schools, an official translation by a "NAATI-certified translator" is required 🇦🇺📄
While going through an agency or translation company is an option, searching for individual translators yourself via the official directory and contacting them directly is actually the cheapest method and allows for more flexible turnaround times!
Here is a straightforward guide on how to search the official NAATI website and tips for requesting quotes ✨
💡 4 Steps to Hire a NAATI Translator Directly
1. Access the official NAATI directory (directory.naati.com.au)
2. Select "Translator" under the service option
3. Set Language to "Japanese" and Direction to "Japanese to English"
4. Pick 2–3 translators from the search results, attach your document files, and request a quote!
💡 Essential Points to Include in Your Quote Request Email ・The type of document you need translated (e.g., Japanese driver's license, family register, etc.) ・Your preferred deadline (whether it's urgent or not) ・Submission format requirements (whether a PDF digital copy is sufficient or if an original hard copy by mail is required)
💡 Key Tips When Requesting ・Rates and turnaround times vary by individual, so getting quotes from 2–3 people at once is a golden rule! ・Always ensure that the delivered document includes an official "NAATI accreditation stamp (with Practitioner ID)."

Before you regret overpaying through an agency, make sure to search directly yourself 👀

“ I was injured at work…”
If this happens to you, it’s important to know about WorkCover, Queensland’s workers’ compensation scheme.

This is a step-by-step guide to making a WorkCover claim online in Queensland, Australia.

Since the rule changes in July 2025, workers are now required to lodge their own claim, whereas the process could previously be handled by a GP in some cases. 😢

Save this post so you know what to do if you’re injured at work!

📌 4 things to prepare before applying

Work Capacity Certificate
Tell your GP that the consultation is for a WorkCover claim and ask them to issue a Work Capacity Certificate.
Medical receipts
Keep receipts from your GP, hospital, pharmacy, or other healthcare providers.
Your employer’s details
Prepare your employer’s business name, address, and contact information.
Your bank account details
These are needed to receive eligible reimbursements or payments.

💡 Important points when applying online

The application is in English, but in many sections, you can use the information from your Work Capacity Certificate as a guide.

・Who is registering the claim? ➔ Select “Worker”

・What is the claim for? ➔ For medical expenses only, select “Medical expense only.” If you are also claiming for time off work, select “Time off work and medical expense.”

・Injury or illness details ➔ Check Part B of your Work Capacity Certificate for the relevant medical information.

・Employment status ➔ For a regular employee, select “Worker.” If you work as a self-employed contractor, such as an Uber driver operating under an ABN, select “Self employed.”

※ If you don't know certain information, such as when you reported the injury to your employer, some fields may be left blank depending on the application.

Finally, upload photos or copies of your Work Capacity Certificate and medical receipts, complete the required confirmations, and click “Submit.”

Applying in English may seem complicated, but knowing the process in advance can make it much easier to lodge a WorkCover claim yourself. 💪

Expired visa in Australia...? Unsure what to do on a Bridging Visa E (BVE)...?

Here is an official Australian government support service you need to know about 🇦🇺✨

The "Immigration Status Resolution Service," provided by the Department of Home Affairs, is an official online platform where individuals with visa issues can consult about their next steps.

You might worry, "Will consulting them lead to immediate detection and deportation...?" But these officers operate separately from the Australian Border Force (ABF), and consultations are completely voluntary.

In other words, it is not a trap where you get caught instantly, but a safe framework where you can work with dedicated officers to figure out how to resolve your current status lawfully.

○ Key Topics You Can Discuss
・Checking future visa options (pathways to regularize your status)
・Support for safe and voluntary departure

○ Important Tips When Applying
・Easy to book via an online form (available by phone or in person)
・Have your reachable phone number, email address, and passport information ready
・Turn off caller ID blocking (to ensure you receive incoming calls from government departments)
・Free interpreting services (TIS National: 131 450) are available if you are not confident in English

The longer you leave it, the worse the situation becomes. Don't carry this burden alone—reach out to official channels or experts to resolve it properly!

Career consultations and LinkedIn seminars are also hosted regularly! Check out the details in the story highlights on my profile 👀
