Can modified bike parts affect your insurance claim?
Potentially!
Bike modifications can potentially impact an insurance claim, depending on:
- Your bike
- The specific modifications
- Your insurance policy
- Whether you’re claiming on your own policy, or claiming against someone else
If you want your own insurance to cover you after an accident, it’s usually best to make sure you tell your insurer about modifications. Some insurers require you to report any modifications, so that the policy can be updated. Failing to do so could mean voiding your coverage.
If you want to make a claim against another person (such as an at-fault driver or their insurer), your modifications are only relevant if they contributed to the accident. If your modifications did not cause the accident (e.g. attaching a saddle bag), they are not relevant. If your modifications did contribute to the accident (such as unlawful lights or signals), then they might make it difficult to bring a claim.
Our suggestions?
1. Update your insurer about any modifications (just in case)
2. Make sure your modifications are safe and roadworthy
