UCL | Dr. Khaled opens its Hong Kong office

For a long time we have advised clients on Hong Kong-related matters, handled disputes and built our partner network across the region.

Opening a physical office is the natural next step: UCL now has a presence in one of Asia’s leading financial and arbitration centres and works with clients directly on the ground.

To mark the occasion we are hosting Safe Harbour: Where Capital Finds Its Defence, a private business event ahead of Hong Kong Arbitration Week (HKAW), one of the key annual gatherings of the international arbitration community.

The discussion brings together arbitrators, barristers and solicitors, a representative of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC) and the head of a Hong Kong private bank with practice spanning the UAE, the DIFC, England, Hong Kong and the CIS.

Two themes central to protecting capital across borders will be in focus: interim measures in support of arbitration and foreign court proceedings and corporate and private wealth structuring. The panels will be followed by a Q&A session and networking.

See you on 18 October in Hong Kong.

Attendance is by invitation and prior registration only. The registration link is in our bio.

Expert as the Key to Success: International Disputes and UAE Courts
UCL Dr. Khaled law firm and the international expert firm Fidem Research Group invite you to a joint webinar dedicated to the role of experts in dispute resolution in the UAE.

Experts play a key role in resolving disputes in the UAE: their findings often influence the assessment of evidence, the amount of claims and, ultimately, the outcome of the case.

During the webinar, practitioners will discuss how an expert’s status is determined, by whom and at what stage an expert is appointed, what powers and responsibilities experts have, and what weight courts or arbitral tribunals give to expert reports. Particular attention will be paid to the key differences between the role of an expert in international arbitration and in proceedings before the UAE state courts.
Participants will learn how to select and appoint the right expert, structure the work with them, effectively present or challenge an expert report, and avoid mistakes that may affect the outcome of a dispute.

Speakers:
Ratmir Proskurnov - Partner, Head of International Legal Practice, UCL Dr. Khaled;
Vladimir Nefediev — Managing Partner, International Expert Firm Fidem Research Group.

Date: 29 October 2026
Time: 16:00 Dubai time / 15:00 Moscow time
Language: Russian
Registration is required in stories.

Our colleagues Ilnar Girfanov and Philipp Kozlov visited the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Moscow.

They met with Ms. Ghaitha Mubarak Ahmed Alameri, Head of Support Services at the Embassy, and members of her team.

Over tea and Emirati hospitality the conversation went well beyond formalities. The discussion covered the day-to-day legal questions that arise for diplomatic missions with a particular focus on employment matters, and how a law firm can best support this kind of work.

For us meetings like this are at the heart of what we do. UCL | Dr. Khaled was built on a deep connection with the UAE and we see our role as a reliable partner to Emirati institutions, businesses and families wherever they need legal support.

Direct, open dialogue with the Embassy helps us understand its priorities first-hand and respond to them quickly and precisely.

The meeting was also an opportunity for Ilnar, who recently joined the firm to lead our GR practice, to introduce himself to the Embassy team. His background at the intersection of law, public policy and institutional communications is exactly what this kind of cooperation calls for.

We left with a clear understanding of how we can be useful and with a concrete matter that our team is already working on.
Our sincere thanks to Ms. Alameri and the Embassy team for the warm welcome, the generous gifts and a genuinely productive conversation. We look forward to continuing our cooperation. 🇦🇪

UCL × AWATERA: a translation that stands up in court

In international legal work, translation is not simply a matter of language.

An inaccurate term in a power of attorney or procedural document can result in the document being rejected, additional requests, or delays to a transaction or legal proceedings.

In the UAE, foreign documents are subject to specific preparation requirements: translation, certification and legalisation procedures depend on the type of document and the authority to which it is submitted. Apostille is not applicable in the UAE, as the country is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention. Where required, consular legalisation is used.

That is why UCL | Dr. Khaled is partnering with AWATERA, a company specialising in legal and corporate translation with 20 years of experience. The company grew out of ABBYY Language Services and has been operating in Dubai since 2021.

For us, this partnership is another element of a comprehensive approach to international transactions and disputes, where the accuracy of the translation matters just as much as the proper handling of the entire document process.

DIFC Courts set aside DIAC award in full over an unargued issue

The DIFC Court of First Instance has set aside a DIAC award in full after finding that the tribunal relied on a legal theory neither party had raised or had an opportunity to address.

The dispute concerned the sale of 65,000 metric tonnes of ultra-low sulphur diesel. Persephone paid 85% of the contract price and claimed damages, while Princeton argued that full payment was a condition for its obligation to deliver.

The tribunal’s majority found that Princeton’s previous acceptance of late payments had effectively changed the payment terms. However, neither party had advanced this argument during the arbitration.

The Court agreed that this breached the parties’ right to be heard. Relying on Oheo Bank v Parker, it found that the unargued issue was reasonably capable of affecting the outcome.

The Court also refused to sever the problematic part of the award: the disputed reasoning was fundamental to the tribunal’s conclusions, so the award was set aside in full.

Key takeaway: tribunals should not decide cases on arguments the parties have had no opportunity to address. For counsel, the decision also highlights the importance of responding when a tribunal appears to be developing an unargued line of reasoning.

DIFC just rewrote the rules for Prescribed Companies.
New Alert material by our team Philipp Korotin, Roman Kurganov

On 24 July 2026, new DIFC Prescribed Company (PC) Regulations came into force a significant shift for anyone using DIFC holding vehicles.

Key changes:

1. All previous eligibility gateways have been removed: a PC can now be established by a person from any jurisdiction, with no GCC ownership or asset link required.
2. Most PCs must now appoint a Corporate Service Provider (CSP).
3. Existing PCs have until 24 January 2027 to appoint a CSP.
4. Non-compliance can trigger fines of up to US$100,000 and revocation of PC status.

This matters most for private investment structures, family offices, foundations and international groups using DIFC entities as holding vehicles.

We’ve put together a full legal update covering what’s changed, who qualifies for exemption, and the concrete steps existing PC owners should take before the transition deadline.

Today, Muslims around the world celebrate one of the most important holidays in Islam — Eid al-Adha.

This holiday is connected with the story of Prophet Ibrahim, who showed deep faith and readiness to fulfill the will of the Almighty. In Islamic tradition, Eid al-Adha symbolizes devotion, mercy, gratitude, and the willingness to share with those in need.

During the holiday, it is customary to gather with family and loved ones, perform prayers, help those in need, and give special attention to charity. One of the important traditions is sharing food with relatives, neighbours, and those who particularly need care and support.

For many countries in the Middle East, including the UAE, Eid al-Adha is not only a religious holiday, but also an important part of cultural and social life, bringing people together around the values of respect, generosity, and mutual support.

The team of UCL الدكتور خالد علي الحضرمي congratulates everyone celebrating this bright holiday. May it bring peace, prosperity, the warmth of loved ones, and the joy of good deeds.

Philipp Korotin has joined our team as Partner and Head of the M&A Practice.

For UCL الدكتور خالد علي الحضرمي, this is an important step in developing our international transactional expertise and strengthening the areas related to corporate law, cross-border transactions, investment projects, and asset ownership structuring.

Philipp’s experience combines international legal advisory work with in-house business experience. This background is particularly valuable for projects where legal precision must be combined with an understanding of the commercial logic of the transaction, the regulatory environment, and the client’s strategic objectives.

The strengthening of our M&A practice reflects the broader development strategy of UCL الدكتور خالد علي الحضرمي: we continue to expand our team, reinforce key practices, and develop expertise that is in demand among international businesses, entrepreneurs, investors, and family offices.

We welcome Philipp to the team and wish him every success in his new role.
